What to Expect
The New Programs Engineering team works at the front-end of vehicle design and development, working in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and prove Tesla's future generation of vehicles. This position requires frequent interaction with our Interior/Exterior Design, Human Factor & Ergonomics, and Vehicle Engineering production teams, most closely with Chassis, Body-in-White, Low-Voltage, NVH, Durability, and CAE analyses and vehicle dynamics and controls partners. You will be part of the team that creates and executes world-class new vehicle architectures. You will utilize your expertise in chassis systems and vehicle attributes and develop as a full vehicle engineer - designing and delivering systems rather than just components. This is a mechanical design engineering position where product design expertise and a fundamental, first principles approach to problem solving are far more important than extensive project engineering or automotive industry specific experience.
What You'll Do
  • Operate as a standalone role and responsible for owning chassis systems (comprising of suspension, brake and steering systems, subframes and wheels/tires) in the early vehicle development phase
  • Architect, mature and develop vehicle chassis systems from initial product scope and concepts through to design & release of prototype level components and systems that represent future production vehicles
  • Capture, document, and trade-off internal and external (regulatory) requirements for chassis systems
  • Generate chassis concept proposals for front/rear suspension, subframes, steering and brake systems in alignment with the new vehicle program scope and attribute requirements
  • Develop a tire portfolio and align tire size with vehicle attributes (loads, comfort, handling dynamics, NVH, efficiency, durability) while achieving desired design proportions and occupants/vehicle packaging
  • Analyze chassis concept proposals through simulations (capturing for example kinematics and compliance and basic ride/lateral/longitudinal vehicle dynamics)
  • Down select chassis solutions generated based on quantifiable vehicle attributes, system cost and weight. Propose and defend solutions in engineering and studio design review meetings
  • Develop in CATIA 3D geometry of suspension, steering and braking systems starting with pick-up points in a 3D space and placeholder geometry. Develop dynamic clearance sweeps for suspension components and wheels/tires
  • Mature 3D chassis geometry over time and align/resolve (as part of a small interdisciplinary team) interfaces and clearances with body structure, interior, thermal and powertrain components
  • Design, release and build chassis components for early-phase physical prototyping to validate the targeted chassis attributes
  • Innovate, develop, and improve engineering development processes continuously
What You'll Bring
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant chassis engineering experience (OEM/supplier, motorsport)
  • Broad experience with automotive chassis systems (suspensions, subframes, brakes, steering, tires) and prototyping
  • First-principles knowledge of vehicle attributes as it relates to chassis systems including vehicle dynamics, noise-vibration and harshness, durability, vehicle packaging
  • Proficiency in CAD (Computer Aided Design) software using parametric elements and knowledge-based engineering tools
  • Strong understanding of GD&T
  • Ability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into product designs
  • Must be proactive in improving processes and driving projects, examples of this should be provided
  • Detail-oriented personality with effective documentation and reporting
  • Excellent communicator, resourceful, and mindful of time management
  • Systems-level thinker with evidence of driving product design optimization across products, disciplines, and teams
  • Capability to run virtual kinematics and compliance analyses to optimize suspension geometry within a given boundary box
  • Experience with subjectively and objectively evaluating braking, steering, ride and handling attributes in production and prototype vehicles
  • Experience with by-wire chassis systems (brakes, steering)
  • Experience in automotive systems engineering
  • Experience with assembly/manufacturing technologies to design innovative assembly architectures and chassis systems
  • Proficiency with CATIA V6 (3DX)
