What to Expect
Tesla's Manufacturing Engineering team is at the forefront of developing first-of-a-kind processes which allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best-in-class quality and rate; in a safe and ergonomic environment. The Coatings team is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer for factory/shop layout. You will design and develop technically complex 2D/3D layouts for finishing/coating of our products; which includes layout development, specification and validation, design for manufacturing, equipment specification and design, as well as installation and commissioning. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors, and technology partners on process development from concept to production. This role requires a thorough understanding of Manufacturing Engineering fundamentals and substantial skills with 2D or 3D CAD software. It is critical for a successful applicant to solve problems using first principles analysis and exercise aggressive design optimization.What You'll Do
  • Develop 2D factory layouts in collaboration with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms to meet Tesla engineering standards and develop an intimate understanding of finishing processes, conveyance strategy, and the overall material flow plan and vision for the factory/Shop
  • Work collaboratively to develop a utility matrix and create 2D layouts for the positioning of equipment and utilities; devise cost-effective 2D layout solutions for optimized part presentation and sustainability
  • Partner with the Packaging/Material Flow team to develop innovative and cost-effective 2D layout solutions that optimize part presentation, increase packing density, and enhance sustainability for both automated and manual loading/unloading processes
  • Progress from 2D/3D layout solutions to a 3D factory simulation to accurately visualize and improve the manufacturing process and material flow
  • Design manufacturing equipment including safety gear, jigs, fixtures, and skids
  • Issue RFQs for equipment production or procurement with detailed specifications
  • Lead equipment design review sessions and guide vendors to meet operational and safety standards
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration and build relationships across the organization, including coordination with other process, equipment, mechanical, electrical and support disciplines including project managers, manufacturing reps, and other stakeholders
  • Lead product design for manufacturability (DFM) and sustainability, including risk analysis, FMEA and cost steering
  • Manage large scale projects, including development of timing plans, risk identification, and project status reporting
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial or Chemical preferred), or equivalent
  • 5 years of related experience in a technology-based industry, where automated methods are utilized in the finishing/coating of consumer products.
  • Hands-on experience with or in the development of functional/aesthetic finishing process layout, material flow, conveyance & factory simulation for automotive paint or powder coating
  • Experience utilizing factory simulation software like Process Simulate/FlexSim/Simul8/Digital Twin/WinMod/Iphysics to plan, analyze, and optimize manufacturing processes
  • Skilled in the use of AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit, with proficiency in SolidWorks, Inventor and Catia considered a plus
  • Proficient in the development and deployment of PFMEAs
  • Knowledge of automated equipment systems and tools - robotic, vision, material handling, conveyors, PLC, HMI, etc
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc (MS Office suite)
  • Travel required ~ 25%
