What to Expect

As a launch engineer on Tesla's HV Battery Design Engineering Team, you will be responsible for the continued ramp, stabilization, optimization, and holistic sustaining of Battery components & assemblies. You will be part of the global team that designs and manufactures Batteries for Tesla vehicles. This includes all structural, thermal, electrical and sensing components required to make a large battery out of hundreds of cells. The Launch role extends beyond simply achieving Start-of-Production; that is just the beginning. It is about continually launching various improvement efforts to refine the product.

What You'll Do
  • Act as the first design point of contact in the factory environment, able to dive deep into a range of cross-functional problems in design or manufacturing
  • Become first point of contact for all design issues during production launch, ramp and sustaining phase of new and existing vehicle batteries
  • Fully understand the battery design, and the manufacturing systems that build it (factory process and equipment)
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Process, and Quality to solve yield barriers and scrap issues (includes creating/qualifying rework, and defining validation test slates)
  • First-responder to yield excursions
  • Root-Cause & Corrective Analysis for product issues
  • Redesign parts when necessary, and occasionally propose new ideas for mass-downs or cost-downs
  • Battery teardowns for field and factory failures
  • Participate in design reviews and change control process
  • Support new line FATs
  • BOM changes, design revisions, scrappy bench-tests
  • Own product improvements (cost, complexity reductions) and refine product specifications
  • Participate in DFMEA's and support PFMEA's
  • Collaborate with Field Quality & Reliability to drive warranty improvements
  • Visit suppliers for part qualifications, design change reviews, line audits, etc.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent; Master's degree is a plus
  • Role is based in Palo Alto, CA
  • Experience a plus but not mandatory; preferably 2-5 years in battery or automotive
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing environments with many cross-functional teams also a plus (1 year)
  • Strong Engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and basic electronics
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 and 3DX experience is a plus
  • Proficiency with statistics and data analysis. SPC/Black-Belt proficiency a plus but not mandatory
  • Demonstrated hands-on abilities (e.g. machine shop skills, technical hobbies/projects, etc.)
  • Preferred experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, PCBA/FPC, and bonding
  • Preferred experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated
  • Preferred experience defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data
  • A detail oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills
  • Desire to own a lot and work hard - we have small teams and fast timelines
  • Able to work across time zones when necessary to coordinate with the global design team
  • Experience with student Formula Vehicle, Solar Car, Formula Baja, etc. is a plus

Expected Compensation

$80,000 - $300,000/annual salary cash and stock awards benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
