What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineering Manager to create, develop, and take on responsibility for state-of-the-art Battery Cell manufacturing laser processes and equipment in our R&D and Pilot line Facility - Tesla Kato Road - Fremont California.

The Tesla Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineering Team is not for the faint of heart, after all, changing the world isn't easy. It is, however, an opportunity to work along-side some of the industry's top experts on some of the most stimulating challenges of the 21st Century.

This role will lead a engineering team responsible to invent, develop, scale up, and optimize battery cell manufacturing processes. This newest member of Manufacturing Engineering will be in lockstep with our Design for Manufacturability team, Product Excellence (Quality), Production Engineering, Production, and New Product Introduction (NPI) to take new manufacturing designs and manufacturing process from initial concept, through prototype development, and into full production. As such, we expect this person to take pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

What You'll Do
  • Build and organize a highly effective team of Manufacturing, Process Development, and Equipment Development Engineers
  • Clearly define expectations for the engineering team which improve overall MFG solutions
  • Drive line development activities from inceptions through closure using the engineering resources on their team
  • Focus on cost of manufacturing reductions in CapEx, BOM, and cost of manufacturing
  • Focus on growth and development of the engineering team
  • Collaborate with production engineering and controls teams to install and troubleshoot new equipment
  • Collaborate with in house and external equipment manufacturers to materialize tools from concept through mass production
  • Use software generated solutions to track activities (engineering and personnel)
  • Maintain detailed component level process documentation, findings, and process manufacturing line development
  • Prepare and present funding approval requests to executive team

Design:

  • Drive component level design for manufacturability
  • Take manufacturing responsibility of next generation battery components
  • Collaborate with design engineering to understand design changes
  • Develop and understand component level manufacturing requirements
  • Maintain detailed component level process documentation and findings
  • Maintain detailed component process level schedule Manufacturing Line

Development:

  • Research and develop new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost
  • Characterize existing processes, establish controls for critical parameters, improve process robustness
  • Develop and manage PFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place
  • Define process, equipment, and layout for prototype workstations
  • Develop specifications for custom prototype equipment
  • Develop validation criteria for custom prototype equipment
  • Define new production line requirements that achieve significant innovation targets versus previous solutions
  • Research and define new automation vendors to support Tesla's aggressive growth plans
  • Coordinate site readiness activities with Factory Design team

Launch:

  • Co-Develop DFMEA, PFMEA, and Control Documentation
  • Coordinate site readiness activities with Tesla Construction team
  • Manage installation coordination and schedule of new production systems
  • Execute Production Automation Equipment Validation Testing
  • Ramp production lines to achieve aggressive launch schedules
  • Train receiving teams on new production systems
  • Prepare handover documentation for receiving teams
  • Present production line updates on a regular basis to Tesla Executives
  • Debug process integration issues to ensure interactions between processes are kept under control
  • Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)
What You'll Bring

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 10 years Engineering Leadership Experience
  • 5 years Battery Engineering
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing involving Industrial laser processing and/or High-speed welding processes
  • Experience with Early R&D/Pilot Manufacturing Engineering
  • Proven problem solver - demonstrated experience of data driven root cause analysis, statistical software (JMP) a plus
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability
  • Knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA execution
  • Experience with equipment and process validation testing
  • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production
  • Proficiency in mechanical assembly (tolerance analysis, laser welding, mechanical pressing)
  • Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experience with mechanical-electrical/mechatronic systems
  • Experience with automation, motion control, PLC programming and HMI design
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Knowledgeable about production quality metrics
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Exemplary analytical ability, organization skills, and attention to detail
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio

Expected Compensation

$96,000 - $258,000/annual salary cash and stock awards benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
