Job Summary and Qualifications

The Out Patient Surgery RN manages the nursing care & preparation of patients receiving Endoscopy, Surgical, Cath Lab, and Radiology procedures in accordance with ASPAN and AORN Perioperataive Standards and Recommended Practices and follows the established Policies set by Terre Haute Regional Hospital Healthcare Organization.

What will you do in this role:

• Provides age and culturally appropriate patient care for General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ear/Nose/Throat Surgery, Cataract Surgery, Podiatric Surgery, Endoscopic procedures, Pain Management Procedure, Cardiac Catheterization Procedure, Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urological Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecological Surgery
• Actively instructs and educates patients and their families on the Plan of Care and discharge instructions for the all Out Patient procedures performed.
• Assists physicians with Thoracentesis Procedures on patients in Out Patient Surgery Suite
• Performs blood transfusion procedure on patients in Out Patient Surgery Suite
• Knows and performs techniques for specimens collection, labeling, ordering, and documenting
• Maintains supply levels to insure efficiency of Preparation of Out Patients
• Orients and mentors new staff members and students
• Follows Infection control and standard precautions
• Assesses and assists with patient’s discharge planning needs with appropriate healthcare team
• Monitors, records, communicates and updates appropriately the patient condition to healthcare team
• Documents care accurately and completely
• Transcribes Telephone and Verbal Physician orders
• Follows Anesthesia Provider Preoperative testing guidelines
• Review and confirm consent, H&P, results of lab tests are on chart prior to patient procedure being performed
• Performs initial and on-going patient assessment according to accepted standards of nursing practice
• Administers prescribed medications, and treatments and documents same
• Assists with flow of endoscopy schedule
• Assumes charge nurse duties prn
• Takes call

What qualifications you will need:

• Current Indiana licensure as a Registered Nurse or active Compact State RN license
• Current certification in Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
• Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing. Associate Degree required, BSN preferred.
• Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment
• Previous Out Patient experience preferred
