Terran Orbital is seeking a motivated Sr. Principal Engineer - Motor Controls to join our growing team. Reporting to the Integrated Product Team Lead for Reaction Wheels, the Sr. Motor Controls Engineer, will work within a multidisciplinary team to develop and support the design, prototype, qualification and sustainment of innovative components and modules for various spacecraft.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design of Brushless DC Motor controls
  • Design of Servo Control Systems incorporating position feedback and measurement systems
  • Experience developing field-oriented control and knowing what applications benefit from this method.
  • Design and develop Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA)
  • Develop, maintain, and update analytical and control models in C/C , MATLAB, and Simulink
  • Create analytical models of analog / power circuits utilizing industry standard tools such as SPICE or derivatives.
  • Design control loops and analyze stability of linear control systems.
  • Support Design for Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility
  • Support Motor and Component selection, debugging and troubleshooting.
  • Develop test plans through development, qualification, characterization, and acceptance testing.
  • Provide input on design timelines and cost estimates for new programs and initiatives.
  • Participate in debugging, testing, and verification activities for components and modules.
  • Experience specifying and design Ground Support Equipment to test individual PCBAs and fully integrated motor systems showing requirement compliance.
  • Work on simultaneous project tasks ensuring that design deliverables and delivery milestones are met.
  • Contribute to technical guidance and direction to the project team
  • Contribute to Process Development and Continuous Improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualification and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline
  • 15 years of relevant experience working with Motors and Motor Controls
  • Extensive experience working with and applying VHDL and/or Verilog design on FPGA devices.
  • Working knowledge of code development processes and methods
  • Detail oriented, ability to identify design/manufacturing/procurement issues
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary team environment
  • Able to effectively work on multiple projects running in parallel
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills
Additional Differentiators
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, TCL, Perl
  • Experience developing and working with Serial interfaces such as SPI, I2C, RS-422
  • Experience working with Firmware Code Repositories such as GIT or Bitbucket
  • Basic software development skills using C/C for System on a Chip within the FPGA
  • Experience using Simscape Electrical and HDL Coder.
  • Ability to work within a dynamic and team centric environment and support various multi-disciplinary engineering groups
  • Experience working with related space and/or aerospace applications

Salary Range $170,000-$230,000
Your actual level and base salary will be determined case-by-case and may vary based on the job-related qualification, knowledge, skills, education, and experience. Physical Demands
