FULL-TIME COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

POSITION TYPE: Full-time

LOCATION: Northern Virginia (Headquartered in Alexandria City)

Tenants and Workers United (TWU) has a 37 year history of organizing and building power among low-income communities of color -- primarily immigrants -- to win changes that advance social justice and racial equity across Northern Virginia.

TWU is seeking a motivated Community Organizer to support and expand our ongoing grassroots organizing across Northern Virginia, including in Alexandria City, south Fairfax County, and eastern Prince William County.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an energetic commitment to the pursuit of social justice and racial equity for low-income communities of color across Northern Virginia
  • Conduct door-to-door and community-based outreach to recruiter, engage, survey, activate, and retain community members
  • Establish and maintain a base of active community members
  • Provide timely and personalized follow-ups to all contacts, members, and leaders
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of contacts, outreach, recruitment, retention, and event attendance, activity turnout, etc.
  • Identify and develop community leaders and community-based leadership teams who drive our campaigns, utilizing one-on-one meetings, house visits, group leadership trainings, etc. to do so
  • Manage regular community meetings; create and facilitate agendas; support new community leaders to facilitate meetings
  • Create actions, trainings, and mobilization opportunities in order to galvanize members as well as activists, allies, partners, and coalitions
  • Develop and conduct civic and political education trainings for community members and leaders to develop an individual and collective civic consciousness
  • Participate in the development and execution of issue campaigns
  • Foster relationships and work in collaboration with key allies and partners to build coalitions
  • Plan and facilitate community-led and community-centered meetings with local government leaders and elected officials
  • Collaborate with fellow organizers and staff on large, organization-wide events and mobilizations, communications tasks, fundraising campaigns, trainings, events, other activities, as needed
  • Perform other organizational duties, as required

Requirements:

  • Commitment to TWU’s mission of social, racial, and economic justice
  • Strong English language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Gmail, etc.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a variety of relationships on multiple levels
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • A growth mindset and an ability to take instruction and utilize constructive feedback for growth and learning
  • Minimum 1 year experience grassroots organizing and a a strong understanding of principles of grassroots organizing
  • A driver’s license and access to a car
  • Availability to work evenings and some weekends, as needed
  • A minimum 1 year commitment to this position

Preferred Skills:

  • Spanish language skills highly preferred
  • Experience working with and/or organizing immigrant communities
  • Experience developing campaign strategy and planning and implementing direct action organizing campaigns
  • Experience developing and leading political education trainings
  • Experience creating flyers and educational/informational materials
  • Experience working in coalition with other groups, allies, and partners

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range begins at $44,000 and is commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid time off; health, vision, and dental insurance; and phone and transportation stipends. The employer of record is New Virginia Majority.
