Full-Time Gynecological Oncology Patient Navigator

T.E.A.L.® (Tell Every Amazing Lady About Ovarian Cancer Louisa M. McGregor Ovarian Cancer Foundation) is a national 501c3 not-for-profit with its community center located in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

T.E.A.L.® is looking for a Gynecological Oncology Patient Navigator to join our small team, and the Gynecological Oncology team at a Brooklyn Hospital. The Gynecological Oncology Patient Navigator will work most of the time at the Hospital, but is expected to represent T.E.A.L.®, and promote T.E.A.L.®’s mission simultaneously. This person will also be expected to report back to the T.E.A.L.® Community Center to assist with programming, and designing workshops meant to address the socio-economic barriers to health from the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).

The Gynecological Oncology Patient Navigator will be implemented as part of the Gynecological Oncology care team to include participation in team meetings and huddles while maintaining an open line of communication with the team. The Gynecological Oncology Patient Navigator functions as the primary care coordinator for patients and collaborates with key clinical staff to ensure comprehensive care and treatment. They will coordinate appointments, provide logistical support, act as a liaison between the patient and medical team, direct patient inquiries to appropriate staff, and facilitate collection of medical records, insurance and financial information. The position includes direct contact and communication with patients, in person, on telephone or via email.

This position is meant to eliminate health disparities by increasing enrollment of patients from underrepresented communities diagnosed with gynecologic cancers into clinical trials and improving compliance with recommended treatment by helping them overcome barriers of cost, fear, and misinformation.

  • Educates the patient on the purpose of the visit and schedules the appointment. Oversees the gathering of patient information and records from healthcare providers in preparation for appointment. Enters patient demographics including need for interpreter services into appropriate patient scheduling systems. Contact the patient in advance to confirm the appointment.
  • Ensures that subsequent medical information is added to the patient chart as necessary. Arranges for interpreter services for all appointments and treatments as needed.
  • Tracks consultation, simulation and new appointments to be made available to patients as needed. Assists patients in the waiting area with non-clinical aspects of paperwork. Coordinates multi-site appointments and schedules ancillary appointments as requested.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of ancillary appointments as requested and follow up appointments, post treatment. Oversees the rescheduling of consultations and follow-up appointments due to physician cancellation
  • Take initial intake assessments which will address the socio-economic barriers to health from the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
  • Managing the barriers to health (transportation, insurance, chaperone, etc)
  • Provide referrals and resources to community-based programs
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Diverse and culturally sensitive customer service skills
  • Ability to manage high stress, chronically ill population with complicated psycho-social issues
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel)
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience in healthcare setting working directly with patients
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Ability to work in surroundings with degree of dust, noise, odors, etc. without undue discomfort
  • Ability to hear, talk, walk, stand, bend, and stretch
  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time at desk to perform job functions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and co-workers
  • Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, bodily fluid or tissue, but potential for exposure

Compensation: $50,000-$65,0000 plus benefits. Competitive salary based on experience.

This is a grant-funded, two-year position with no budgetary flexibility to go outside the bounds of the grant allocated salary.

Benefits:

Regular full-time employees receive ten (10) paid holidays, and ten (10) paid vacation days.

As a part of T.E.A.L.®’s internal wellness program, each employee will be entitled to eight (8) paid wellness hours, and eight (8) paid personal hours. These wellness hours will be used for annual checkups (physical, dental cleaning, OBGYN visit, prostate exam, mammograms, etc..) The Foundation makes available at shared cost, health insurance coverage for each full- time employee, and their dependents.
