TEGNA is Hiring a Digital Editor Near Washington, DC

WUSA9-TV, the TEGNA-owned CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C., is searching for a Digital Desk Editor who is curious about the world and has a vision for what local news can and should be for multiple platforms.

The ideal candidate for this position is a journalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment and loves to inspire, inform and make a positive impact on our audience and community. This person should also have a passion for social media content creation, and a knowledge of the latest trends and emerging platforms.

This position requires producing original content for WUSA9 including interactive-rich digital articles that reach our audience on whatever device they are using at the time, as well as finding creative ways to share our storytelling on social platforms. Working alongside other digital team members, the ideal candidate will also be responsible for responding quickly to breaking news and managing content produced by others, including copy editing for our various desktop/mobile/social platforms.

A successful candidate is innovative, with solid news judgment and critical thinking skills who thrives in a high-demand breaking news environment. This person works well under pressure, can perform in stressful situations and has excellent multi-tasking capabilities.

Qualified candidates are very strong writers who have experience posting stories to digital/mobile/social platforms, video and photo-editing skills and the ability to work a flexible schedule when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and post stories to all WUSA9 digital/mobile/social platforms
  • Generate digital traffic through social referrals and SEO best practices
  • Create enterprise social media content, as well as reformatting broadcast content for a social audience
  • Monitor news releases, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other online news sources
  • Use social media mining tools to discover follow up and unique story angles
  • Coordinate live streams of news events with a heavy emphasis on breaking news
  • Send push alerts to breaking news stories/ high-interest content
  • Pitch story ideas in daily editorial meetings

Requirements:

  • Be an ethical journalist
  • Prior newsroom experience, with at least 1-3 years digital experience
  • Excellent writing (stories, social, push notifications), editing and proofreading skills
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and how to implement
  • Proficiency in running social media accounts and how to optimize videos for specific platforms
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage requests from various sources with an ability to work well with varied personalities within deadlines
  • Understanding digital metrics and analytics is a plus
  • Self-starter who can also work well as a member of a team
  • Deadline-driven and able to multitask/perform well in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule as warranted by vacations/breaking news coverage
