IGNACIO SCHOOL DISTRICT

TITLE VI NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES TEACHER
STUDENT, PARENT, SCHOOL LIAISON

The Title VI position will teach Native American cultures and serve as student, parent and school liaison. This person will
advocate for students and families, through positive, professional relationships with school personnel, the Southern Ute
Tribe, other Tribes, and other entities that provide services for our youth.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree with a teaching license is required.
2. Native American preferred.
3. Experience working with Native American students and families preferred.
4. Appreciates and has a basic understanding of Native American Culture.
5. Ability to communicate positively and work cooperatively with students, parents, school personnel
and Tribal officials.
6. Must be able to work after school hours.
7. Is trustworthy and understands confidentiality.
8. Relates well to people of all ethnic groups.
9. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
10. Demonstrates strong organizational skills.
11. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach Native American Cultures in grades 6-12.
2. Work as a liaison between parents, the Indian Education Parent Committee and the schools to collaborate on
behalf of Native American students.
3. Monitor student grades, conduct, attendance and coordinate with the teachers to keep parents informed on a
regular basis.
4. Maintain a daily log of contacts made.
5. Tutor or set up tutoring for all Native American students.
6. Work with teachers to individualize academic programs to meet student’s needs including Individual Education
Plans.
7. Develop and presents a cultural in-service for District 11JT staff.
8. Participate in the Indian Education Parent and the Multi-Cultural committees.
9. Assist with Title VI and Impact Aid Application.
10. Discuss with parents and students information about the school district’s procedures and programs.
11. Encourage parents/students to participate in school committees/events.
12. Sponsor the Native American Youth Organization and recruit students for Native American youth conferences
and pow-wows.
13. Perform other duties as assigned by the Administration.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal with input from the Indian Education Parent Committee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 164 days. Regular teacher contract as per board policy.
