Position Summary:
The role of this position is to support indigenous students in developing positive skills and strategies for engaging in the learning environment of the classroom.Counselor to provide direct services to students, staff, and the community, facilitating understanding, interpersonal relationships, problem solving and decision-making skills. In turn supporting individual responsibility in education, as well as career and vocational development. The goal of this position is to maximize student achievement through screening, assessment, individual and/or group support and/or skill building services and consultation for students with social emotional needs. This position will be key to our indigenous students’ ability to successfully engage in learning while at school. An essential skill in this role is the ability to raise awareness, foster appreciation, garner sensitivity for the traditions, values and customs of other races, religions, ethnicities, and nationalities, including Native Americans.


Typical Responsibilities:

  • Understand historical trauma to include grief, loss, genocide, colonization, and assimilation, including cultural practices, and sensitivities of our native student population.
  • The work of school counselors includes understanding and supporting students that face barriers in education because of their cultural backgrounds. Cultural backgrounds and beliefs can affect student performance in school and social and emotional behaviors.
  • Participation in the process of Response to Intervention (RtI)/Multi-Tier Systems of Support (MTSS) which includes development of behavioral support plans with the input of the MTSS team.
  • Provide real time pull-out behavior support to students who are struggling in the classroom setting to help them practice social emotional skills and coping mechanisms.
  • Use research-based interventions proven to aid counseling efforts with the Native American population through respect and understanding of the local customs and cultural beliefs.
  • Provide individual or group sessions that focus on trauma informed practices as well as social emotional skills and coping mechanisms.
  • Navigating and accessing community resources for students and their families.
  • Participate in school-based plans for emergency situations and crisis interventions.
  • Collaboration with faculty in areas of student need, e.g. behavior management, crisis, abuse, etc.
  • Ongoing parent communication/contact.
  • Recognize and understand the system framework for Trauma-Informed Schools. Growing capacity and necessary understanding for counseling interventions with students.
  • Open communication with Director of Native American Services and UMU Education Department.
  • Attend Indigenous IEP (Individualized Education Plan) meeting with parents and teachers.
  • Mediate and advocate for indigenous students.
  • Conflict resolution with parents and school.
  • Documentation, which includes but is not limited to record keeping, progress notes, and data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Candidate Profile:

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in social work or counseling is preferred
  • Colorado Department of Education License for school social work or eligible for CO state licensure


Experience and Skills:

  • Experience assisting with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support
  • Consulting with teachers, parents, and administrators
  • Providing individual and group counseling / therapy
  • Extensive knowledge of native traditions, celebrations, rituals, customs, and belief systems.
  • Excellent communication skills
