The opportunity
The Media Relations team is seeking a Senior Media Relations Specialist who can develop and execute strategic media relations strategies and plans to protect and enhance the reputation of TC Energy. The candidate has knowledge of public policy and politics; a deep network of political, business and energy media contacts; and a solid understanding of today's communications landscape including the tools, platforms and technologies required to support reputation enhancement and management.

Reporting to the Manager, Media Relations, this individual has the proven skills and capacity to manage crisis/issues, pitch stories, conduct background briefings and build alliances with fellow practitioners as well as collaborate across communications, external relations and other corporate functions to assist with the execution of the media relations strategy.

As a key member of TC Energy's Media Relations team, the successful candidate will be a strategic and energetic self-starter with a focus on supporting the broader team in protecting and enhancing our corporate reputation and telling our story. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Responsible for providing expert assistance in developing and executing strategic media plans and strategies that influence, inform and contextualize issues important to TC Energy's operations and reputation:
    • Crisis response, reputation, and issues management.
    • Provides strategic communication consultation to business partners. Uses solid understanding of partners' business to proactively provide media relations communications solutions.
  • Development and maintenance of key media relationships, proactive media engagement and spokesperson duties as required.
  • Write for a variety of partners and audiences: media pitches, media responses, executive briefings, listening reports, event plans, speaking remarks, newsroom statements and updates, website posts, fact sheet/material development.
  • Provide backup to other media relations team roles.
  • Media monitoring and reporting as required.
  • Coaching and preparing subject matter experts for media opportunities.
  • Mentor and lead plans, schedules and review the work of team members.
  • Development of news releases and media advisories.
  • Support in the development and use of tools and templates.
  • Assist in crisis and emergency response, reputation and issues management.
  • Serve as a member of the on-call team and may require early morning, evening and weekend work at times.
  • Other tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of a recognized post-secondary institution, preference for journalism, broadcasting, communications, business or related field specialty.
  • A minimum of eight years of related experience.
  • Experience in media relationship management or demonstrated relationships with traditional media.
  • Plugged in news consumer on top of issues, storylines and future headlines.
  • Experience in the energy industry, crisis management and working with senior leaders.
  • Primary business hours are required, and some evening and weekend work will be required, in addition to participating in an on-call emergency response rotation and occasional travel.
  • A government-issued passport is required. Cross-border travel may be required.
  • Strategic thinker who can link work to company priorities and develop strategies with little guidance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to convey complex information to diverse audiences and develop compelling narratives.
  • Skilled at informing and providing timely and relevant information.
  • Able to navigate through ambiguity and make recommendations.
  • Effective at priority setting and able to adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Critical thinker capable of problem-solving to find effective and fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Ability to connect and establish positive relationships at all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to individuals experienced in media relationship management or demonstrated relationships with traditional media.
  • Experience with social media, content management systems, databases and tools, including news release dissemination platforms would also be an asset.
  • Previous experience in the energy industry and understanding of the public policy landscape across North America is also preferred.
