Tandem Specialized is a successful Northern Michigan based trucking company looking to add to our Freight Planning & Dispatch team at our Grayling, Michigan location. We are a regional flatbed trucking company with 45 trucks and 65 trailers, operating throughout the Midwest, with a strong focus on heavy-haul freight in the state of Michigan. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual with management experience who thrives on taking initiative, is not afraid of change, and strives for continuous improvement in all processes.

Job Description

  • Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and associates within the Transportation department. Drive associate engagement and retention, and create a culture that embodies Tandem’s values.
  • Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through one-on-one coaching, training on policy and procedures, assisting in problem resolution when required, and leading by example. Ensure Transportation department associates are appropriately trained in job duties and follow all safety guidelines and requirements.
  • Create an atmosphere in which open and frequent communication is encouraged, and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Monitor production goals and maintain a zero-error attitude to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  • Anticipate, analyze and troubleshoot problems with drivers, customer pickups and deliveries, and devise and implement cost-effective and legal logistics solutions.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely dispatch of drivers.
  • Preparation and management of various reports.
  • Monitoring driver HOS for proper dispatching and customer load requirements.
  • Accurate tracking of equipment to ensure profitability and minimal loss.
  • Provide creative solutions to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Rotating on-call schedule after hours and on weekends.
  • Professional attitude and able to work in fast paced environment.
  • Requires strong communication, computer and interpersonal skills.
  • Resolve issues that could affect scheduled appointment times and proactively communicate with the customer.
  • Must be able to multi-task in a dynamic team environment, while also having the ability to efficiently and effectively make independent decisions.
  • Participate in periodic trainings & safety meetings

Detailed Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous management experience required
  • Experience in dispatch department within the trucking industry
  • Minimum - High school diploma or equivalent education
  • College Degree is preferred
  • Knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations
  • Proficiency in data entry and typing skills is essential and required
  • Strong knowledge in Windows and Microsoft Office Products
  • Professionalism and effective communication skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Willingness to solve problems with critical thinking
  • Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills.
  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of DOT requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Intermediate to Advanced computer skills
  • Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office products
