Job Summary

Job Summary: The lead perioperative nurse is responsible for maintaining the smooth and efficient patient flow within the ASC. The incumbent delegates assignments and provides supervision for the support staff in accordance with their level of training and a patient’s acuity. Works in cooperation with medical providers to insure the quality of patient care.
Adhere to the TCC Ch’eghwtsen’ model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.


Essential Functions

Representative Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Ambulatory Surgery Center the job incumbent:
1. Supervises nursing staff and monitors their needs.
2. Coordinates daily administrative duties, including schedules, nursing assignments, and patient care.
3. Oversees patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
4. Mentors and trains new staff and providing support and guidance to all staff members.
5. Monitors medical charts and providing compassionate care and assistance to patients and families.
6. Functions as a liaison with doctors and administrators and communicates any protocol changes to staff.
7. Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations.
8. Records and maintains accurate reports.
9. Identifies issues or emergencies while responding in a calm and efficient manner.
10. Provides direct patient care as needed.
11. Assists ASC Director with annual performance evaluations.
12. Need to comply/adherence to all applicable policies and procedure.
13. Must protect the privacy of all patients’ information as required by federal and state laws, including HIPAA-HITEC.

Other Responsibilities:
1. Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director of ASC


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
1. BSN or MSN
2. Alaska state licensure in Nursing.
3. Three years’ operating room experience.
4. Prior leadership in clinical setting preferred.
5. Current certification in BLS, ACLS and PALS required.
6. Experience working in a surgery setting required.
7. Further certifications may be required.
8. Must pass background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to interact comfortably with of patients, and staff in a stressful environment.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies located in the operating room.
3. Ability to work in all service lines within the ASC, Preoperative, Intraoperative, postoperative and Sterile Processing. Must be proficient in one either, Intraoperative or Post –operative to apply.
4. Ability to, set priorities, identifies and resolves problems effectively and efficiently.
5. Skill in building trust and develop consensus within the surgical team.
6. Skill in follow-through and organization.
7. Leadership abilities.

Supervision:
This position is a supervisory position.


Supervision

Physical demands: Extended hours may be required. Work is in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. May be subject to harsh environmental conditions. Perioperative Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious Diseases; they may be exposed to anesthetic gases, drugs and radiation. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system. Conditions include but are not limited to the following: Ability to routinely lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds. Fine motor skills and visual acuity. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time.

Summation

Summation: The Position requires the ability to work independently and to prioritize responsibilities. The applicant must possess the ability to deal tactfully with patients, families, physicians, and employees. Clinically proficient in pre-op, Intraoperative, and or PACU nursing skills by demonstrating knowledge of the development needs of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Must be able to support Director in the day to day operations when the director is absent.
