Department BSD PED - Allergy and Immunology

About the Department In the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, we strive to provide the highest level of complex care for children from diagnosis and treatment to conducting research to find promising new therapies with a focus on teaching. Job Summary The job performs routine assignments related to delivering a walking intervention for African-American women with asthma. There will be some travel required.
This at-will position is wholly funded by contractual grant funding, which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Complete 1-week training on delivery of the walking intervention.

  • Prepare and conduct monthly group sessions which typically occur in the evenings and/or weekends.

  • Assess participant engagement at each session.

  • Attend 1-hour weekly interventionist meeting.

  • Ability to travel to different sites.

  • Reach out to participants that miss the group sessions to conduct make-up sessions in-person or on the phone prior to next group session.

  • Collect group visit satisfaction forms for make-up visits and send forms to research assistants.

  • Screens and assesses individuals and/or families to determine education and counseling needs. Counsels individuals and/or on the basic principals of health education.

  • Supports individual and community health by contributing to the building and maintaining working relationships with those in public health care. Serves as an educational resource and patient advocate.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).

  • Advanced degree in Nursing (MSN or higher).

Experience:

  • Two years of relevant research experience in areas such as asthma.

  • Experience teaching adults.

  • Knowledge of the targeted population, African American women and/or adults with asthma.

  • Basic computer skills.

Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license.

Working Conditions

  • Part-time position.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Ability to use computer for extended periods.

  • Travel to different sites; available transportation to clinical sites, UChicago or University of Illinois Chicago.

  • This position will be in a clinical setting, i.e., patient-facing.
