JOB SUMMARY

The Plant Operator performs a variety of manual labor, semi-skilled and skilled work in the operations and maintenance for the Wastewater/Water/Septage treatment plants, and relative pump stations/distribution systems; learns and demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required. This is the entry level class within the Treatment Plant Operator series. Positions in this classification perform less difficult and complex tasks and receive on-the-job training in the performance of more complex duties. This class is flexibly staffed and may advance to the higher-level class after gaining experience, obtaining required certifications and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications for that classification.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation and management of Wastewater/Water/Septage treatment plants, collection system lines, manholes, water distribution lines and related facilities and equipment; performs required analytical testing and performs accurate and truthful data logging as required; may assist in training entry level personnel; provides assistance to other County departments and divisions, as required.

· Inspects all equipment for proper operation and records pertinent information such as equipment maintenance activities, run times, general observations as to performance of all equipment.

· Makes independent decisions regarding adjustments to plant equipment based on careful evaluation of cause and effect of said adjustments.

· Assist in the coordination of contracted repair work; maintains records on work performed and inventories of needed supplies and materials; regularly inspects all aspects of the Wastewater/Water/Septage treatment plants assigned.

· Responds to questions and inquiries from the public; may respond to emergency repair calls.

· Establishes positive working relationships with County Sanitary District management and staff, other agencies and the public.

· Practices, techniques and materials used in the Wastewater/Water/Septage treatment industry.

· Tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair activities.

· Operation and use of a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment.

· Utilities marking and locating procedures and practices.

· Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

· Deal tactfully with the public and others in providing information, answering questions and providing customer service.

· Read, understand, and follow posted work rules and procedures; follow oral and written directions; and accept constructive criticism.

· Meet the requirements to wear respiratory protection or other safety equipment.

· Perform heavy manual labor.

· Prepare and maintain basic reports and records.

· Basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word and data entry.

· Safely and effectively operate tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of Wastewater/Water/Septage treatment plants, sewer collection and water distribution systems and related facilities.

· Other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in general mechanical maintenance and construction work and a High School Diploma or equivalent. Possession of valid driver’s license; will accept Maryland CDL but not required at time of hire. Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Pay: $44,108.00 per year
