Inside Plant Technician

In this role, you will be joining a team that is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of network infrastructure in our data centers, central offices, and remote sites. As an Inside Plant Technician, you will apply a wide variety of your skillsets with the ISP Team and the Network Operations Team to ensure that our fiber network is operating reliably and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and document infrastructure in our data centers, central offices, and remote sites.
  • Observe network monitoring systems for faults and alerts along with coordinating self-response.
  • OLT Shelf commissioning, testing, certification, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate and synchronize with other departments across the organization to complete work orders, projects, and tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Ask questions when critical information isn’t presented or seems inaccurate.
  • Comprehensive data entry into ticketing systems and work orders as work is carried out. This includes meticulously inputting statements and uploading photos as necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure its long-term reliability and performance. This occasionally includes pressure washing or using a string trimmer.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Network Operations team to resolve network issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Identify and escalate potential hazards.
  • Provide escalation support for NOC, OSP, and Network Engineering.
  • Observe senior level technicians to gain hands-on experience in new or unfamiliar areas.
  • Vendor and contractor engagement for troubleshooting, RMA requests, service tickets, and bug fixes.
  • Execute MOPs under maintenance windows as approved by the NOC while meeting established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Ability to work independently and participate in team collaborations.
  • Self-time management of multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to think on your feet and present possible solutions to challenges in the field.
  • Thoroughly and accurately perform inventory and asset recording.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in working with electronics, fiber, telecom, or copper networks.
  • Must pass drug test and background verification.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record for operating company vehicles and equipment.
  • Engage in on-call rotation to provide 24/7 response and support for production systems, services, and infrastructure.
  • Must be comfortable working in all weather conditions. Up to 90% of duties shall be performed in an outdoor setting.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, dig, and reach.
  • Usage of PPE including Safety Glasses, Gloves, Hearing Protection, and Safety Toe Boots as necessary.
  • Frequently push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50lbs. Occasionally handle objects up to 106lbs.
  • Self-awareness and consideration with strong attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, including overnights, evenings, and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel out of town with possible overnight stays as required.
  • Acclimated to using a computer and mobile phone.
  • Frequent travel to warehouses, remote sites, and data centers.

Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency in using a windows computer for daily functions in Serial Terminal applications, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office suite such as Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong fiber-specific knowledge in:
    • Passive Optical Networks and Splitters
    • Identifying transceivers, diplexers, and respective tolerances.
    • Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) equipment and components.
    • Optical connection types and their significance.
    • Identification of different cable terms such as bend-insensitive, loose tube, and ribbon types.
  • Operation of various test equipment such as speed testing devices, Volt/Multi-meters, Light meters, Scopes, and Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) units.
  • L2/L3 networking in the subject of Link Aggregations, VLANs, IP Addressing, and subnets.
  • Know the differences, function, and identification of various telco equipment such Modems, Routers, Shelves, Switches, Firewalls, Servers, and EDFAs.
  • In-depth electrical knowledge surrounding AC and DC power systems such as, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, rectifiers, and reverse polarity 48V-DC systems.
  • Mechanically inclined on working with Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems [HVAC], Generators, and other various equipment.
  • Good understanding of how to route and secure structured cabling, along with fiber cable care.
  • Interpretation of route diversity and redundancy for power and data cabling.
  • Adaptability to quickly understand and compensate for changes in a constantly evolving industry.

This is an hourly (non-remote) based position out of The Woodlands, TX requiring 40-hour work weeks with occasional overtime as required.
