System One is Hiring a Senior Traffic Engineer Near Schaumburg, IL

What you'll be challenged to do:

Seeking to hire a Senior Traffic Engineer for our Schaumburg or Chicago office that has 8 years or more years of experience. We are looking for a candidate to join our team who is excited to work on a variety of complex projects with colleagues who enjoy all aspects of design and engineering analysis. Our Traffic Team generally works on projects involving design alternative analyses, Phase 1 engineering studies, small to large-scale traffic analyses, safety studies, travel demand modeling, and design of traffic signals, signing, pavement markings and lighting. Our success has been built on teamwork with our colleagues in highway, bridge, stormwater, and utility design. We strive for innovation and ingenuity in our designs so we can provide the best outcome for all transportation users. Proven ability to work in a team environment and share of experience and expertise with teammates is ideal. A successful candidate should be able to lead a traffic team in addition plan, conduct and coordinate traffic engineering work, prepare reports, plans and specs for design projects, and monitor multiple project schedules and budgets.

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead the Traffic Team, which is one of the seven Teams under the Highway Division Leader, for Chicago Office and Downtown Office. This would include staffing plans, mentoring staff and day to day tasks to manage Traffic Team.
  • Perform personnel duties for the Traffic Team, such as, setting performance success plans, evaluations, recommending promotions, raises, and general supervisor responsibilities.
  • Prepares and directs traffic analysis and studies, including safety studies. Also completes design and plan preparation of traffic signal and interconnect drawings.
  • Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, and development of novel concepts and approaches.
  • Working independently, as a team member or lead, to execute specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, project design, preparation of specifications and technical plans. Must be able to coordinate responsibilities with the team and/or team leader.
  • Reviews project design for general compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and client contract requirements, and related specifications.
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and manpower, resolving engineering design problems.
  • Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Shows understanding of team management, develops project scope of work, estimating manpower needs, prepare CPM schedules, and tracks project progress.
  • Assures that the project is completed within the allocated period of time and within the budget that has been assigned.
  • Advocate for, lead, and mentor entry level engineers.
  • Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside his organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to the field.
  • Plans and executes project meeting.
  • Assures the project meets quality control and quality assurance guidelines.
  • Interprets changes in the contract and advises management on needed changes.
  • Maintain professional and technical, skills by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Assist and participate in preparation of business proposals.
  • Attend weekly Highway Division staffing meetings and work with the Highway Division Leader, other six Highway Team Leaders, and Roadway and /or Bridge Project Managers to balance workload of the team and staffing plans for projects.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in State of Illinois with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering, preferred
  • Experience working with IDOT and other local transportation agencies.
  • Experience with traffic and safety analysis. Knowledge of the MUTCD and Highway Capacity Manual.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete project deliverables. Ability to organize and manage multiple projects, and self-motivated to meet project deadlines.
  • Experience with traffic simulation software (Synchro, HCS, Sidra or Vissim).
  • Experience with design of traffic control elements. Plans, specifications and estimates for traffic signals, roadway signing, pavement markings, and work-zone maintenance of traffic plans, preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with MicroStation CAD and MS Excel and Word (required).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or Boards of Directors.
  •  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and various engineering software systems depending on engineering discipline.
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.
  • Actively advocates for full inclusion in the workplace, fostering an environment that welcomes diversity and values equity for all employees, partners, clients, and the communities that serves.

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:

  • Certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE), preferred.
