Remote, long-term contract opportunity!
System One is seeking a highly capable and motivated Materials Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Materials Development and Qualification team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on materials, processes, supply chain development and supplier qualification for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for a wide range of development activities ranging from fundamental laboratory testing to development of a manufacturing process for advanced reactor components. A primary function of this role will be to use fundamental metallurgical principles and requirements definition to inform the development of a manufacturing process in conjunction with external suppliers.
Responsibilities
Interface with project teams to provide material selection, processes, and requirements for reactor development programs.
Perform scientific analysis of reports and test data (e.g., metallography, non-destructive inspection, mechanical properties, ductility) and generate technical specifications to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualification.
Oversee test programs designed to develop an understanding of complex mechanical phenomena (e.g. creep, fatigue, creep fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and fracture) in sodium cooled fast reactor plant materials such as steel alloys
Provide materials engineering support for the procurement of engineered components and systems including leading technical development of suppliers to increase technology readiness level of key components.
Ideal Background
Minimum of 3 years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or an advanced degree with related experience, or equivalent experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a related technical discipline is desired.
Prior experience in materials development, testing, and characterization for a nuclear reactor environment is desirable
Experience qualifying materials for service in highly regulated applications is preferred
Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is preferred
Experience developing material processing specifications, evaluating material selections and reviewing vendor material definitions.
An understanding of complex mechanical phenomena (e.g., creep, fatigue, creep fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and fracture) in high temperature systems
Strong communication skills desired
The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork
Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
