Position Title: Overhire Scenic Painter
Department: Production Department, Paint Shop
Reports To: Scenic Charge Artist
Job Type: Part-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)
Salary/Wage: $15-$17 per hour, depending on experience
Benefits eligible: No
Duration: 10-week contract, July 8–September 15, 2024, with possibility of
extension

General Job Description:

The Over hire Scenic Painter assists a 3-person seasonal staff working to support both Syracuse Stage and
the Syracuse University Department of Drama. The Over hire Scenic Painter is a direct report to the Scenic
Charge Artist and works closely with the Lead Scenic Artist. A typical season consists of 12 fully supported
productions as well as other smaller events. The 3,200 square foot paint shop is located off site from the
theaters. The paint shop is one of three shops, with scenery and props, that make up the Scenic Department.
Regular collaboration with these shops is to be expected. While the Over hire Scenic Painter primarily works
in the paint shop, cross-shop work assignments can and do occur.

The description of the position in this document is representative and not exhaustive. Regular collaboration
between shops in the production department and the wider organization is expected. Duties and
responsibilities may shift with organizational needs.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Complete production projects as coordinated by Scenic Charge Artist and Lead Scenic Artist
regarding all painted treatments, this could include:

a. Executing detail-oriented projects such as: wood graining, stone finishes, faux finishes,
aging, and other textures

b. Helping with layout of large projects such as floors, drops, walls, etc.
c. Color Matching
d. Under the delegation of the Charge or Lead Scenic Artist, complete on-stage notes as

required for each production
2. Assist in the maintenance of a clean and organized paint shop
3. Contribute to maintaining a safe environment for all staff, student, and over-hire labor including:

a. Proper use of tools and safety equipment
b. Adherence to the adopted company protocol concerning the safety of all Syracuse

Stage/Syracuse University employees
Ideal Candidate Skills:

1. Color Matching
2. Time management
3. Faux finishing experience
4. Relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

1. Working on ladders and in lifts
2. Standing for 5-8 hours a day
3. Lifting 50 lbs.
4. Use PPR and/or specific precautions as required
