Syracuse Plastic Surgery is Hiring a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Near Syracuse, NY

10 years of Billing/Coding Experience Required

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma required

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred

Charge Entry and Claims Filing

  • Posts daily charges from each encounter form into the computer system accurately and quickly
  • Posts surgery and hospital charges within 24 - 48 hours of surgery and verifies bi-weekly that all charges have been entered
  • Processes all electronic and paper claims for assigned carriers—verifies completeness and accuracy of claim information before submitting

Payment Posting

  • Posts all mailed-in payments and electronic payments by line item; posts adjustments, withholds, and transfers deductibles and co-insurance to patient responsibility; batches them according to protocal

Account Follow-Up

  • Makes necessary arrangements for medical records requests, completion of additional paperwork, etc., if payors request this information prior to payment of claims
  • Responds to written and telephone inquiries from insurance companies

Patient Accounts

  • Sends patient statements according to protocol
  • Checks voicemail daily, returns calls from patients regarding billing or insurance issues
  • Follows up on overdue patient balances according to protocol
  • Establishes payment plans within approved guidelines
  • Prepares accounts status report monthly, showing detail about large balances
  • Recommend accounts needing to be written off
  • Processes refund report for submission to supervisor monthly

Medical Records

  • Answers phone inquiries regarding medical records
  • Creates invoices, according to protocol, for copying and release of medical records
  • Verifies authenticity of subpoenas and release of information forms and processes requests according to state guidelines
  • Maintains patient confidentiality by following the HIPAA Compliance Plan established by the practice; releases PHI in accordance with the practice's HIPAA Compliance Plan, attends regular HIPAA training, maintains data security by refusing to share computer and other passwords, and reports all identified and suspected HIPAA violations to leadership

Other

  • Receives and reviews payor newsletters and notifies leadership and staff of pertinent updates
  • Checks mail and responds to patients who have requested information
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings
  • Performs other duties as requested by practice leadership
  • Assists the Front desk with check in and check out

This position has extensive access to PHI. It requires the review of patient medical records, lab results, tests, referral forms, and encounter forms, which may be computerized or paper-based. It also requires regular access to computerized and paper-based billing and reimbursement data¾which contains both a patient's clinical and financial information.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Typical Physical Demands

Position requires prolonged standing or sitting, as well as frequent bending, stopping or stretching. Employee may be required to lift up to 20 pounds. Employee must have good eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity and the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. The position also requires the use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones or copiers, and normal vision range.

Pay: $19.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 – 40 per week
