Job Description:

Role Summary/Purpose:

The Senior Vice President of Compliance Program and Initiatives plays a pivotal role in ensuring that our organization continues to enhance core compliance program elements necessary to support a strong compliance management system including: (a) compliance risk assessment process and tools; (b) compliance committee materials and reporting to relevant senior level and board committees; (c) legal and regulatory change management process in collaboration with the Legal Department; and (d) compliance resource assessment and budget management. The Senior Vice President of Compliance Program and Initiatives will work closely with the Chief Compliance Officer and Compliance Leadership Team to drive strategic initiatives to support a compliance program that is commensurate with the size and the risk profile of the organization as well as serve as a Compliance central point of contact providing guidance and effective challenge related to enhancements regarding the organization’s broader compliance management system.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Compliance Risk Assessment: lead the continued enhancement and oversight of the execution and reporting of a comprehensive compliance risk assessment. Ensure consistent procedures, reporting and a process for aggregating compliance risk, where appropriate, for the following risk assessments: Compliance, Fair Lending, UDAAP, Money Laundering and Other Banking Laws

  • Compliance Committee Reporting: lead the continued enhancement of Compliance Committee agendas and materials as well as Compliance Committee reporting to the Enterprise Risk Management Committee and the Risk Committee of the Board. Enhancements will include aggregate reporting and dashboards related to key risk indicators, key program indicators and alignment to the compliance risk appetite statement as well as the identification of risk themes and trends and proactive measures to address emerging compliance risks at Synchrony and within the industry. Coordinate and host Compliance Committee meetings and oversee the preparation of committee materials, agenda and sub-committee reports to senior management and Board committees.

  • Legal and Regulatory Change Management: oversee and drive continued enhancement regarding the process, working collaboratively with the Legal Department, other Risk Subject Matter Experts and relevant Business Leaders, to timely assess and operationalize new or modified laws, regulatory guidance and commentary and industry consent orders. 

  • Compliance Program Key Performance Indicators – enhance the aggregate view of Compliance Program KPIs for the Chief Compliance Officer, Compliance Leadership Team and Compliance Committee. Set forth requirements and monitor (1) the review of Compliance owned polices, procedures and job aids; (2) operational requirements, prioritization and timely completion of Compliance Targeted reviews, Concurrent Assessments and Continuous Monitoring engagements included in the annual Risk Testing and Monitoring Schedule; (3) open Compliance owned issues. Develop additional Compliance Program KPIs as necessary

  • Compliance Resource Skill and Capacity Assessment – oversee further development and maintenance of a compliance skill and workforce capacity framework to identify areas requiring improvement and opportunities for professional development as well as areas needing additional resources given business strategy and external factors

  • Strategic Initiatives – oversee strategic compliance program initiatives identified during annual goal setting including initiatives related to compliance program elements such as risk assessment, monitoring and reporting. Additionally, serve as Compliance’s central point of contact providing oversight and effective challenge regarding strategic initiatives related to the enhancement of Synchrony’s compliance management system, including enhancements related to issue management, remediation and the RCSA process

  • Exam management and Internal Audit - oversee and provide support for any Internal Audit reviews of the compliance program as well as regulatory compliance examinations including any requested information and communications with regulators. Prepare and present appropriate content to be shared with regulators on a quarterly basis.

  • Collaborate with the Enterprise Risk Management Team and serve as Compliance’s central point of contact regarding the enterprise risk assessment, risk appetite limits and eGRC enhancements

  • Keep pace with the latest developments in the regulatory environment and the financial services industry to provide guidance to the Compliance team and to relevant business leaders 

  • Supervise, mentor and provide professional development opportunities for direct reports and team members

  • Oversee the All Compliance meeting agenda and materials to drive team engagement, collaboration, education and information regarding emerging risks; manage the Compliance Team budget and other duties and special projects as assigned

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • BA/BS Degree required and 10 years financial services experience including a working knowledge of operations, products and services, or in lieu of degree High School Diploma/GED and 15 years of experience

  • 10 years of legal or compliance experience, a working knowledge of federal banking laws and regulations, strong understanding of compliance risk assessment, monitoring and reporting at a financial institution

  • Excellent leadership and team management skills and demonstrated ability to think strategically, lead change and influence outside one’s span of control.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

Desired Characteristics:

  • Ability to take a landscape view, understand macro-level risks and how and where day to day activities and details connect to larger themes

  • Excellent judgment in determining relative weight and importance of risks, given SYF’s business evolution and the evolution of the external landscape

  • Diplomatic challenge and relationship-building skills

Grade/Level: 15

The salary range for this position is 200,000.00 - 330,000.00 USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.

Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months’ time in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
