Our programs in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts are taught by local professionals who dedicate their time to reinvesting their skills and knowledge and giving back to the young people. By developing and investing in youth, we desire to transform Chicago into a just and equitable city. Our doors are open to everyone! Covering 10 different areas, we offer many different programs that youth can choose from. Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and qualified music therapy teacher to join our summer camp team. The music therapy teacher will be responsible for using music-based interventions to address the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of students with diverse abilities and backgrounds in a supportive camp environment.

Duties:

  • Plan and implement individual and group music therapy sessions for students with varying abilities, including those with developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges, and special needs.
  • Use a variety of music therapy techniques and interventions to address therapeutic goals, such as improving communication skills, emotional expression, social interaction, motor skills, and self-esteem.
  • Adapt music therapy activities to meet the unique needs and preferences of each student, taking into account their interests, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Collaborate with other camp staff, including counselors, educators, and healthcare professionals, to integrate music therapy into overall camp programming and support the holistic development of students.
  • Assess students' progress and evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy interventions through ongoing observation, documentation, and communication with relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide support and guidance to camp staff and volunteers working with students in music therapy sessions, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Incorporate elements of music improvisation, songwriting, lyric analysis, and relaxation techniques into music therapy sessions to promote self-expression, creativity, and emotional regulation.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, caregivers, and other members of the camp community, serving as an advocate for the therapeutic benefits of music.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards of practice in all aspects of music therapy service delivery.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and interdisciplinary team meetings to collaborate on student goals, progress, and individualized support plans.
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and organization of music therapy spaces and equipment as needed.

Requirements:

  • Board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) or eligibility to sit for the board certification exam.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in music therapy from an accredited program.
  • Clinical experience working as a music therapist with individuals with special needs, preferably in a camp or recreational setting.
  • Strong clinical skills in assessment, treatment planning, implementation, and evaluation of music therapy interventions.
  • Proficiency in playing musical instruments and vocal skills sufficient to facilitate therapeutic music experiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, students, parents, and caregivers.
  • Empathy, patience, and sensitivity to the needs of individuals with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Code of Ethics.
  • Reliable and organized with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to pass a background check and provide references upon request.
