DevOps Engineer

The Switchfly team is looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our Systems Team and collaborate with our developers, QA, and IT staff alike. Our solutions are built to provide a global loyalty and travel booking platform for some of the world’s most recognized travel and financial institutions. Performance and uptime are critical business objectives to oversee our code releases, combining an understanding of both engineering and coding. From creating and implementing systems and automation tooling to analyzing data to improve existing ones, the DevOps Engineering role strives to increase productivity in the workplace, understanding the software development lifecycle and having a clear understanding of various automation tools for developing highly observable pipelines (CI/CD pipelines).

Objectives of this Role

  • Building and setting up new DevOps tooling and deployment solutions
  • Understanding the needs of cross-functional stakeholders and accurately communicating those problem statements to others
  • Working on ways to automate and improve development and release processes
  • Reviewing, testing, and examining code written by others and analyzing results
  • Ensuring that systems and solutions are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats
  • Identifying technical problems and developing software updates and ‘fixes’
  • Working with software developers and software engineers to ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Develop solutions and scripts to automate infrastructure and pipelines
  • Design procedures for system troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Deploy releases and fixes into non-production and production
  • Provide Level 1 internal technical support, performing root cause analysis for non-production and production errors
  • Build tooling to reduce occurrences of errors and improve internal customer experience
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues

Core Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant field
  • 5 years software, operations, or systems management experience in Linux and Web applications
  • 3 years working in a DevOps Engineering role with a clear understanding of industry best practices and tooling
  • Proficient with Cloud APIs and Tooling (e.g., AWS, GCP, Oracle Cloud, etc.)
  • Proficient with Git, Git Workflows, as well as CI/CD Pipelines
  • Proficient with infrastructure automation /configuration management tooling (Everything as Code): Ansible, Terraform, Packer, Groovy, etc. 
  • Solid working knowledge in one or more of the following languages: Javascript, Node.js, Python, Ruby, or Java
  • Working knowledge of databases and SQL (e.g., Postgres, Couchbase, PGbouncer, etc.)
  • Problem-solving mindset and attitude
  • Collaborative team spirit

Additional Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience with managing load balanced, high volume, highly available application environment and knowledge of configuration management for load balancers, SSL tunnels, CDN’s, DNS and firewalls
  • Proficient with application stack management and debugging in Apache, Tomcat, Postgres, PG Bouncer, Hibernate and Couchbase environment
  • Experience with build deployment tools, such as Ant, Maven, Gradle, and npm CLI
  • Experience in using Splunk for event correlation during debug 
  • Knowledge of Automated testing and tools (unit, integration, end-to-end, TestNG, Selenium/Grid)
  • Knowledge of security principles and practices (PenTesting, compliance/accreditation experience, and encryption knowledge)
