Sweet Home Charter School is Hiring a SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSISTANT, 6.25 HRS PER DAY, CHARTER SCHOOL (#2122-84) Near Sweet Home, OR

Job Grade 104

SUMMARY 

Under general supervision, to assist a variety of instructional assessment and activities; to assist in the conduct of learning activities with children experiencing special learning needs; to perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for instructional personnel; and to do other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains a cooperative relationship with fellow staff members, students, and the general public.
  • Adheres to and enforces district, state, and federal laws, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Assists the instructor to prepare for classroom activities, including materials collection, distribution, and maintenance, equipment set-up, etc.
  • Helps assigned students, under the direction of a certified instructor and using previously prepared materials, to learn the subject material.
  • Aids instructor(s) with non-instructional classroom activities; assists individual children in need of special attention.
  • Supervises the administration of prepared tests; may grade examinations and classroom or written work and record grades.
  • Types material for classroom or program use
  • Maintains information on assigned students, including attendance, instructional data, grades, etc.
  • Supervises and maintains student discipline, under direction of certified employee.
  • Uses special teaching techniques related to student's learning difficulty
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the principal or teacher.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT

  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for working with special students.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board deems appropriate

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associate’s or higher degree, or(2) Completion at least 48 semesters or 72 quarter hours of college coursework; or (3) Meet a rigorous standard of quality, and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, as appropriate, reading/language arts, writing and mathematics or reading readiness, writing readiness and mathematics

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to work with severely handicapped. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification may exert 30 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
