Position Type: Full-time/PRN 

Reports to:  Med Surg - Nursing Director

Chief Nursing Officer

Department: Med Surg

Summary/Objective:

The Charge Nurse RN will be clinically competent while guiding and delivering care to patients in the Med Surg Department utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation. Will effectively interact with patients, physicians, significant others and other health team members while maintaining all standards of professional nursing. RN will collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team; providing physical and psychological support to patients. Promotes and restores patients’ health by completing nursing process.

Essential Functions:

  1. Guide the patient flow of the unit. Ensure proper discharge plans and follow-up are made prior to patient discharge. 
  2. Communicates with the Hospitalist and Consulting Practitioners to ensure continuity of patient care.
  3. Acts as a Nursing Leader and ensures patients are getting proper nursing care.
  4. Ensures safety of the unit, including a safe environment. 
  5. Collaborates with other departments to coordinate needs on the unit including staffing, supplies, patient throughput, discharge planning, social services, safety, compliance, and ancillary services. 
  6. Assists in allocating charges correctly in the patient record. 
  7. Takes charge of the oversight of care of each patient on the unit.
  8. Demonstrate appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient's care, as evidenced by client/staff observation and respond appropriately.
  9. Assess the patient: collect and document the patient's current health status and medical history. 
  10. Complete and/or review Admission Data Record. 
  11. Make accurate assessment of patient's status and respond appropriately.
  12. Give a thorough, concise report at change of shift. Communicate pertinent information to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  13. Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation according to EHR guidelines.
  14. Reads and understands all policies and procedures pertinent to the unit.
  15. Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information.
  16. Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
  17. Participate in economical utilization of supplies and ensure that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner. 
  18. Adhere to administrative system/nursing service policies as evidenced by Policies and Procedures.
  19. Ability to care for patients with PICC lines, Central Lines and PIV’s
  20. Must be able to monitor Telemetry patients, and recognize lethal arrhythmias.
  21. Must administer and be current, confident and knowledgeable of medications based on age and clinical condition of patient.
  22. Remain conscientious in regard to personal hygiene and comply with specific division/unit regulations.
  23. Attend 50 % of General Monthly Nurses Meetings as well as Departmental meetings.
  24. Comply with specific system/division/unit policy and procedure concerning safety including all aspects of patient care in Med Surg that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Always support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
  25. Collaborate with other nurses and health team members to ensure the patient's wellbeing as evidenced by staff/client feedback.
  26. Maintain positive working relationships within the department as well as other departments and physicians. 
  27. Provides exceptional customer service, putting the patient’s needs before their own.
  28. Handles conflict with patients and coworkers positively.
  29. Ability to work in a stressful environment successfully by maintaining composure and professionalism.
  30. Able to work independently and function in a team atmosphere as well.
  31. Takes responsibility for own personal and professional development.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position will supervise other RN’s, LVN’s, CNA’s, and Nursing students.

Work Environment:

Med Surg consisting of work area and patient rooms that are well-lit and ventilated. May be exposed to communicable diseases. May experience traumatic and stressful situations, including psychiatric, dying and deceased patients. 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires intermittent physical activity, endurance, ability to assist, lift and support patients. Duties regularly require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching as well as lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position with self-scheduling of three 12-hour shifts per week. (Overtime is available). Work schedule does require weekends and holidays. Ability and willingness to work extra shifts that are outside the shift core hours are required when staffing shortages occur.

Requirements

Required Education, Experience and License

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.?

Knowledge regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Current RN nursing license from the State of Texas or Compact state, in pursuit of Texas license.

Current BCLS. ACLS and TCAR within 12 months of hire.
