Purpose Under the direction of the Fleet and Facilities Manager, the Fleet / Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs daily repair and maintenance on all landfill machines, vehicles, and equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform on-going inspection and daily preventive maintenance activities on all mechanical, electrical, and rolling equipment; Respond to requests relating to service calls and maintenance needs/problems in a timely and professional manner; Observe operation of machines, vehicles and all mechanical and electrical equipment for potential problems; Troubleshoot equipment as referred by work orders or verbal directives and determine necessary repairs; perform such work as is feasible and appropriate; Review operator’s daily inspection reports; Maintain accurate records of maintenance on all machinery, vehicles, and equipment; Utilize a variety of mechanical, welding and machinist tools to fabricate, rebuild, and repair equipment and parts; Relay needs of parts and supplies to Fleet and Facilities Manager; Periodically test start-up and performance of all machinery, vehicles and equipment; Maintain clean and organized garage, and Fabricate, assemble, and install special structures and equipment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS While performing the essential duties of this position, the individual is regularly required to move one’s entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stopping twisting, and kneeling; considerable use of the arms and legs, including use of fingers, reach with hands and arms, and speak and hear; The individual will regularly lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move objects of 100 pounds or more; Tools used include ladders; power tools such as drills, presses and lathes; and other noise producing tools and equipment; Specific vision abilities required by this job include near, far, corrected, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus, and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) requirements as needed: hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility garment, work gloves, and steel toe boots. WORKING CONDITIONS Heavy vehicle traffic conditions and enter into spaces with limited work area; Near moving mechanical parts, in elevated dangerous conditions, and outdoors; Significant exposure to adverse weather conditions; sun exposure; cold; heat; loud noise; chemicals; dust; odors; fumes; and mechanical, fire and electrical hazards, and Must be available for emergency call, shift work, and mandatory overtime based on operational needs.
