Now is your chance to join and support our Fleet Services Section within our General Services Bureau. You will have the opportunity to provide customer service and attention to detail through the repair and maintenance of District assets including District vehicles and equipment. The Fleet Technician is responsible for performing preventative and routine maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of vehicles, agricultural tractors, bulldozers, forestry equipment, hydraulic repairs, and heavy trucks. Conducts safety inspections and training on equipment. This opportunity offers an ability to make an impact on the organization and provides flexibility and a true work-life balance. Starting Compensation:

Fleet Technician 1: $17.24 - $21.98
Fleet Technician 2: $19.57 - $24.93
Fleet Technician 3: $22.18 - $28.27

The starting salary ranges are included for the Fleet Technician profile which reflects the minimum to 50% of the respective pay grades. The starting salary will be based on the education and experience of the successful candidate. The District conducts annual performance evaluations that may award applicable pay increases based on positive employee performance.

Essential Functions

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment. Checks oil and other lubricants, batteries, belts, filters, bearings, coolant, spark plugs, brake pads, tires, exhaust systems, and other systems and components. Repairs, adjusts, and/or replaces parts as necessary. Inspects and repairs exterior components, and trailers as needed. Performs quality control inspections on all repairs.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, analyzes, detects, and corrects or repairs malfunctions and/or arranges for outside repair of gasoline/hybrid and diesel/hybrid powered vehicles and equipment, including automobiles and light trucks, heavy equipment and trucks, small engines, ATVs, airboats, etc.
  • Reviews, correlates, and processes daily work orders. Enters completed P-Card purchases and vehicle/equipment work orders into the computerized fleet maintenance system.
  • Maintains and controls shop supplies, used spare parts, and accessories. Requisitions and receives replacement and any other parts necessary to perform vehicle and equipment repair and service. Maintains an inventory of tools and shop equipment and keeps them clean and in working order.
  • Inspects the shop area and surroundings to ensure compliance with safety standards and rules pertaining to accident prevention. Provides input to the Fleet Services Manager concerning equipment requirements and related costs estimates and on other topics as needed.
  • The District plays a critical, emergency management role before, during, and after major storm events and/or in conjunction with the overall emergency management strategy, operations, and recovery for the State of Florida. The employee therefore may be required to perform duties as assigned before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted in the field or in an automotive shop. As needed travel is required to other service office locations, project sites, or field sites often in remote undeveloped areas. Work activity is primarily standing with ability to perform continuous repetitive tasks with one or both hands or feet. Work involves frequent field work with exposures to temperature, humidity, and extreme conditions. Work involves continuous exposure to fuel, oil, and other engine fluids.

Employee must continuously lift and carry up to 20 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds. There is an occasional need to lift and carry objects up to 100 pounds. Activity involves ability to frequently bend, squat, crawl, climb, and reach above shoulder level. There is an occasional requirement to operate heavy equipment/machinery and operate automotive equipment for two hours or more at a time. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Employee may be subject to call-in outside of regularly scheduled work hours, or required to be on call, including on nights, weekends or holidays, to respond to emergency management activities or other incidents requiring rapid response in support of District operations.

Required Credentials for Fleet Technician Opportunities

Fleet Technician 1

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years automotive or equipment repair related work experience
  • Two (2) ASE certifications
  • Valid Class A CDL within 12 months of hire
  • Valid driver’s license

Fleet Technician 2

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Five (5) years automotive or equipment repair related work experience
  • Four (4) ASE certifications
  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Valid driver’s license

Fleet Technician 3

  • Associates Degree and eight (8) years automotive or equipment repair related work experience OR High School Diploma or equivalent and ten (10) years automotive or equipment repair related work experience.
  • Six (6) ASE certifications
  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Credentials for All Fleet Technician Opportunities

  • Field repair experience on heavy equipment

Additional Details

The Fleet Technician position is typically scheduled to work 40 hours per week out of the Tampa, FL office. This position is eligible for over-time compensation for hours worked over 40 hours, in a week.

The Fleet Technician position is a safety sensitive position. As such, the employee will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Travel Required

Yes. Some travel, using District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
