Organization: EMC - Eden Medical Center Position Overview: Assists in preparing for and during surgery by performing routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies of the department and hospital to assure quality patient care. Job Description: Technical Skills: Participates in the preparation of surgical instruments and supplies as required Utilizes physician preference card to set up sterile table, instruments and supplies according to type of operation correctly and efficiently. Assists team in the preparation, positioning and draping of patient according to need, physician preference and type of procedure Passes instruments to surgeon & assistants; retracts, suctions, and cuts sutures as directed by surgeon(s). Assists in preparing room for the next patient. Helps collect instruments, supplies and equipment for case cart as time permits. Assists other members of the team with turnover and preparation of the room. Helps open instruments and supplies for case before scrubbing. Demonstrates a working knowledge of a variety of surgical instruments required to prepare and implement a surgical procedure with technical proficiency. Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments throughout the procedure. Prepares and knows the specific uses of all needed equipment and supplies, including solutions and drugs (excluding the dispensing of drugs). Train/Precept new hires and staff as assigned, including conducting in-service education. Critical and Analytical Thinking: Anticipates and determines the needs of surgeons in a consistent manner to achieve quality patient care. Anticipates the needs for individual patients. Adjusts surgical setup to meet changing needs intraoperatively by requesting appropriate instruments and supplies as a surgical case progress in a timely manner. Demonstrates the ability to prepare for and actively participates with basic surgical knowledge in a large cross-section of surgical procedures. Identifies existing instrument and supply inventory and explores alternative choices daily for problem-solving Demonstrates the ability to determine the appropriate sequence of intraoperative instruments used on each case; demonstrates a repertoire of skills and knowledge pertinent to all the specialties on every case. Contributes ideas to facilitate the smooth functioning of the unit PRN. Professional Accountability: Attends departmental and educational sessions to keep updated in instruments, equipment and procedures. Responsible for knowing information that is disseminated regarding procedures / instruments / supplies / equipment at AM and PM report and/or reading Communication Book. Ensures cooperation from team members to follow P&P protocols on a per case basis. Follows all written or verbal guidelines. Accountable for following guidelines when given verbally or in written format on a consistent basis. Practices within established limits according to the Job Description and scope of practice consistently. Communication (Oral and Written): Participates in the care and preparation of the intraoperative surgical patient as necessary for a well organized unit. Communicates patient care needs to circulator intraoperatively in a timely and appropriate manner. Quality: Ensures aseptic technique is maintained throughout each operation according to accepted standards at all times. Performs and maintains correct count of sponges, needles and other items as indicated by P&P on all cases. Properly labels medications on the sterile field. Cares for specimens. Collaborates and assists in the care, maintenance and use of supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner. Applies effective skills in compiling and formulating supplies for daily cases to achieve a cost-effective organization of each case Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner Actively participate in the cleaning and care of instruments during and after each case and is able to state the rationale for decontamination and sterilization EDUCATION Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma. HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience OR Other: GED or equivalent education/experience Other: Completion of a formal accredited Operating Room Technician program CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Upon Hire CST-Certified Surgical Technologist Upon Hire PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN: 2 (Two) years scrubbing experience in hospital SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Basic knowledge of surgical procedures, equipment, and supplies. Requires strong communication, organization and interpersonal skills. Requires flexibility to accommodate emergencies as well as changing schedules and priorities.
