Sustainable Westport is Hiring a Program Manager Near Westport, CT

Westport has long been a pioneer in sustainability—whether it was the first town east of the Mississippi to ban single-use plastic bags, one of the first towns to declare “We Are Still In” when it was announced that the US would be withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, or having the first fully electric police car on the East Coast.

Sustainable Westport, a former town-appointed committee of the Town of Westport and now a fully independent 501c3 organization, inspires, supports, and educates our community to implement both big and small changes across five pillars (Community, Buildings, Energy, Transportation, Resources & Waste Management) to help create a more sustainable future.

We are excited to recruit an experienced Program Manager and environmental advocate who will help us build on our existing programming and identify, plan, execute, and report on new program activities to help support our mission. Under the supervision of the Co-Directors and in coordination with our staff and/or volunteers, this position will be responsible for activating education and public awareness campaigns, certification programs, tools or resources, speaker series, and large-scale events and community programs that will help educate and inspire action to help make Westport a greener, healthier community.

This is a part-time position that will be conducted both remotely and in person. To effectively plan and execute programs, the Program Manager will need to be available to attend meetings and in-person events. However, the majority of day-to-day Program Work can be completed remotely. The salary is commensurate with the candidate’s skills and experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Co-Directors, Board, and Advisory Group to identify priorities and goals for programming
  • Manage the development and launch/implementation of annual or multi-year specific programs, tools, campaigns, or projects that promote various aspects of sustainability, including, without limitation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, effective recycling, protection of natural resources, clean and convenient transportation
  • Identify strategy, tactics, timelines, budgets, materials, and metrics for internally created programs
  • Guide development and launch of programs or campaigns, track results, and evaluate success
  • Advise and support on marketing and communication initiatives tied to programming
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key community stakeholders
  • Perform administrative duties: Including scheduling of project meetings, team member coordination, and other follow-up calls and emails as required
  • Consider ways to replicate or expand projects, programs, or campaigns
  • Consider ways to position projects to funders and help draft materials for grants or sponsors
  • Other duties as assigned

We are seeking candidates who are articulate, highly organized, responsible, tech-savvy and work both independently and in a team-oriented environment. Candidates should have:

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • A personal commitment to addressing climate change
  • Strong program and project management skills and experience
  • A proactive approach and strong work ethic is required
  • A positive attitude and commitment to working as a team player. Competency with basic computing and cloud-based software, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Ideal candidate would reside in Westport, CT, but applicants from neighboring communities are encouraged to apply

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to admin@sustinableswestport.org and include “Program Manager” in the subject line.
