Surry Community College is Hiring a Basic Law Enforcement Training/In-Service Instructor (Part-Time) (Continuous Recruitment) Near Dobson, NC

The instructor will instruct BLET students in the thirty-seven blocks of required instruction in the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program, as well as numerous mandated blocks of law enforcement in-service classes. The instructor must be prepared to teach individuals the cognitive, physical, and critical thinking skills that are required of a law enforcement officer. The instructor will be required to demonstrate and teach the student in the use of lethal and non-lethal weapons, mechanical equipment, and electronic data devices that are currently used in the law enforcement profession. Law Enforcement Instructors are required to maintain certifications in the areas of their expertise.
NOTE: The purpose of a continuous recruitment posting is to build a pool of interested applicants should the need for additional adjuncts arise due to student enrollment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach a law enforcement class in a professional manner
  • Attend contracted classes in a punctual manner.
  • Properly test and evaluate the student’s abilities as required by the North Carolina Administrative Code
  • Assist the Director in updating tests when outlines are revised
  • Follow and enforce college policy and procedures
  • Be responsible for all assigned equipment and supplies
  • Ensure all student registration forms, rosters, and pay and attendance forms are completed in a timely and proper manner
  • Ensure that all instruction conforms to requirements mandated by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission and the North Carolina Administrative Code
  • Maintain proper behavior and order in the classroom and during practical exercises
  • Ensure practical exercises are conducted in a safe and professional manner in conformance of the rules set forth in the North Carolina Administrative Code
  • Handle class disruptions in a professional manner
  • Ensure active student participation
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
General Qualifications
The individual must have a background in law enforcement, either currently active or retired. To perform this job successfully the individual must be able to teach the job functions that are being covered in the particular law enforcement training outline. Job knowledge, past experience(s), and the ability to demonstrate different physical and mental requirements of the profession in a satisfactorily manner is required. Periodic evaluations are conducted and must reflect satisfactory performance. The instructor must maintain current instructor certification(s) in his/her area(s) of expertise as mandated by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.

Required Qualifications
Minimum five years law enforcement experience
North Carolina Training and Standards Instructor Certification in each area of the instructor’s expertise
Preferred Qualifications
Associates Degree or higher

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • The instructor may be required to use weapons that produce loud rapport and recoil.
  • The instructor may be required to operate a motor vehicle in accordance to rules and operating requirements of the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
  • The instructor may be required to demonstrate non-lethal control techniques that would require great physical exertion and stamina.
  • The instructor may be required to demonstrate the use of chemical munitions that contain irritants that greatly affect the eyes, skin, and respiratory system for a short duration of time.
