Supernal is Hiring a Lead Aerodynamics & Performance Engineer Near Irvine, CA

What we do:

The Lead Aerodynamics & Performance Engineer leads and conducts the planning and execution of aerodynamics and performance tasks for rotorcraft design and analysis, ground tests, and flight tests. The role interfaces regularly with other engineers working on Conceptual Design, Handling Qualities, Loads & Dynamics, Structural Design, Stress Analysis, Flight Controls, Noise, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), amongst others.

Supernal provides an inviting open-space workplace designed to foster collaboration, which aligns with one of our core values. This position is required to work on-site 5 days a week.

What you can do:

  • Lead and conduct the aerodynamic design, analysis, and testing of rotorcraft throughout the various stages of development
  • Lead and conduct rotor and mission performance calculations and the underlying engineering analyses that provide vital inputs to these calculations
  • Evaluate component test and vehicle test data, using empirical data to apply improvements to analytical predictions and modeling
  • Lead and conduct mission and point performance analyses to inform vehicle development and track Key Performance Parameters
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering team to conduct multi-disciplinary trade studies to guide design decisions
  • Lead and conduct the development and execution of test procedures
  • Maintain safety of test crews and articles by monitoring and assessing aerodynamics and performance characteristics
  • Lead and conduct model updates based on flight test data
  • Lead and conduct requirement verification activities in various engineering subject areas
  • Lead and conduct the development of engineering tools to complete engineering tasks associated with the Supernal concepts
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers
  • Partner with PMO organization to execute build plan
  • Requires up to 25% of domestic and international travel
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field required; Master’s or PhD preferred
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Experience performing aerodynamics and performance analysis to evaluate new concepts and refine existing concepts
  • Experience with innovative, physics-based aerodynamics analysis and design methods
  • Experience with rotorcraft or fixed-wing performance analysis techniques that builds on applicable educational experience
  • Proficient understanding of aerodynamics engineering fundamentals, especially with regards to an aircraft
  • Capability to assess the aerodynamics and performance of vertical lift aircraft through analysis, test, and a combination of the two
  • Demonstrable project planning and leadership skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactively communicate and follow-up
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite

You may also be able to contribute:

  • Experience performing analysis on VTOL aircraft preferred
