Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy research arm of the State University of New York, conducts numerous studies on federal, state, and local government finances; on public-policy issues that involve relationships among those three levels of government; and on policy and management issues in New York State. The Institute's research relies on extensive and highly detailed analysis of data on government expenditures, revenues, and other indicators.

A policy analyst will support Institute researchers on projects in a wide range of fields including public finance, public health, education, and workforce development. The analyst will be responsible for identifying relevant data sets, conducting quantitative analysis, meeting with collaborators and assisting in the writing and presentation of papers, blogs, and other research output. The analyst will be working on sponsored research projects for the institute.

  • The analyst will work with the research team at the Rockefeller Institute of Government, outside agencies and the public-at-large.

Duties and Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

  • Data analysis for Institute generated or sponsored projects
  • Writing and communicating findings to peers, sponsors, and public
  • Development of own research ideas under supervision of leadership and the research team

Demonstrated competence in the following:

  • Identifying and procuring essential data sets policy analysis.
  • Analyzing policy issues.
  • Building professional relationships and interacting with staff in federal, state, and local government agencies, private-sector organizations, and with other researchers.
  • Communicating effectively, including superior writing skills.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree. Master's degree preferred.
  • The candidate should have completed coursework in quantitative methods for social science research in fields such as political science, economics, public health, public policy, sociology, or management.

Additional requirements include:

  • Advanced ability with data analysis and data portrayal
  • Experience with data management analysis software such as R, SAS or STATA.
  • Experience with GIS and Tableau
  • Strong organization and critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Additional Information:

  • Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $60,000-$70,000.
  • Excellent Benefit Package which includes: NYS health insurance, free dental and vision coverage, competitive retirement options, tuition assistance, parental leave at full pay, and generous vacation, sick, and holiday time. Generous amount of time off: 13 days of paid holidays per year; 15 days of vacation and 15 days of sick time accrued for the first year of employment. Then increases thereafter.
