The Department of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for a Lecturer in English with a focus on medieval literatures and cultures for the 2023 - 2024 academic year. We seek a scholar with primary specialization in early British literature. Expectations include, but are not limited to, teaching courses in British literature from beginnings to early Renaissance, medieval English literature, introductory literature, and composition.

Known for its interests in global literatures, environmental writing, and popular culture, the English Department has 11 full-time professors offering courses in composition, creative and professional writing, critical theory, American, British, and World literatures, and linguistics. We have nearly 200 majors in English and about 150 Elementary Education majors with an English concentration. English majors may pursue a literature or a writing concentration, as well as a dual English/ Adolescence Education - English degree; the department also offers 5 minors, including one in Classical Studies. Duties include but are not limited to

  • Teaching courses in medieval literatures, Shakespeare, introductions to literature, and composition (specific courses to be determined by the candidate's expertise and departmental needs)
  • Conducting research in the candidate's area of expertise.

Job Requirements:


Required qualifications:

  • Terminal degree or ABD in English (or related field) with primary specialization in medieval literature
  • Prior experience teaching composition.

Preferred:

  • Expertise in queer literature and/or in related areas, such as Scandinavian saga/poetry, Arthurian literature, saints' vitae, travel literature, or early world literature
  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations.
  • Ability to contribute to existing departmental areas such as linguistics, environmental literature, and/or our writing concentration.
