The duties of this position are to be performed while demonstrating all of Sunshine Ace Hardware’s Core Values. The Assistant Controller works closely with the Vice-President of Finance, President, Executive Team, and Store Managers to prepare financial statements for a multi-store, large volume family owned business and ensure the accuracy of all financial records and transactions. This position analyzes trends and advises on variances, assists in developing a fiscal strategy that aligns with the organization’s goals, and provides overall support for the company’s operations. This position will require a strong attention to detail, active contribution to the fiscal operations of the company, and overall responsibility for day-to-day accounting functions.

Your Role

  • Work closely with the Vice-President of Finance to assist the department in achieving its goals along with the company’s goals and help execute growth plans
  • Ensure compliance with the financial procedures of the organization
  • Produce timely monthly financial reports including cash flow projections and various metrics to help determine trends. Produce reports for store management
  • Manage KPI’s and reporting of metrics by store and for the entire company.
  • Responsible for monthly financial closing processes
  • Responsible for bank reconciliation as well as various balance sheet account reconciliations and analysis including inventory. Prepare and enter journal entries based on these analyses
  • Proficiency in data analysis and research variances to budget
  • Assist in developing annual budgets along with re-forecasting on a quarterly basis
  • Maintain Fixed Asset schedule for the entire company
  • Work closely with external auditors on providing documents and workpapers for annual tax return preparation. Prepare schedules for year-end audit and quarterly reviews
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data
  • Identify and recommend ways for continuous process improvement in order to streamline the accounting function and improve internal controls while also looking for opportunities to remove redundancies and eliminate inefficiencies
  • Assist management with ad hoc requests and analysis and special projects
  • Some assignments may require associate to work closely with store management team and be proactive in addressing their needs

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Finance, and a minimum of five (5) years of directly related accounting experience
  • Proven experience with day to day financial operations
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Excel; basic knowledge of GAAP; use of Google product suite (Spreadsheets, documents, etc.)
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Team player with a focus on internal customer satisfaction
  • Strong analytical skills with an attention to detail
  • Assist in making decisions by bringing recommendations to VP of Finance on task at hand
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments to identify proper solutions to issues at hand
  • Ability to determine appropriate prioritization of individual monthly tasks in order to meet overall deadlines seeking guidance when needed
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with adherence to deadlines is require
  • Ability to improve processes and create efficiencies
  • Flexibility and adaptability to evolving business needs

Physical Demands

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 25 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and effectively verbally communicate to exchange information.

Other Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Driver License with a clean driving record in accordance with the company’s insurance carrier’s standards
  • Fast paced environment. Heavy workload required during key financial processes such as monthly, year-end close and budget. These periods may require work outside of the regular work schedule including evenings and weekends.
