Primary Function:

The Controller – Farms is responsible for preparing and reporting financial performance results to meet internal and external financial reporting requirements, field inquiries and prepare periodic presentations of results. The Controller – Farms is a key stakeholder to the success of people, plants, and performance of our internally owned and partnered Farms. Assist the Director with financial plans, forecasts, budgets, and the maintenance of its fiscal records. The Controller – Farms has responsibility for ensuring effective financial controls. The position oversees the financial processing, reconciling, and reporting for a portfolio of internally owned and partnered Farms in the United States and Canada.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and review the month end financial processing for individual farms, including reconciliation of accounts, preparation of supporting schedules, accruals, adjusting entries, variance and ratio analysis and financial statement review.
  • Develop processes to provide timely financial reporting and analysis, forecasts, operating/capital budgets.
  • Oversight and stewardship of spending at farms to monitor spend levels versus budget/forecasts with early identification of items out of budget/forecast scope and other trends at variance to budget/forecast.
  • Work with farm management systems and internal FP&A team, to analyze and explain results, variances and prepare forecasts.
  • Ensure that adequate management controls are in place to protect the farm’s assets. As appropriate, design and document financial control policies and procedures
  • Participate in the annual external audit, tax preparation and be involved with periodic regulatory requests as needed.
  • Lead due diligence and project management of potential new greenhouse joint ventures.
  • Shares skills and knowledge with direct reports and colleagues-helps to develop others.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the team.
  • Partner with internal FP&A team in financial modeling of greenhouse operations and joint venture structures with return and payback analysis.
  • Business case analyses as required, including but not limited to, new Greenhouse investment and other CAPEX within current Greenhouse facilities.
  • Lead the roll out of a detailed Business Intelligence reporting plan for the farms, including but not limited to the automation of reporting, creation of various dashboards, combining of various data sources, working with IT development team to validate data.
  • Uses deep understanding of objectives, issues, and root causes and provides insightful, fact-based data analysis to help solve complex problems.
  • Understands strategic plans and ensures metrics in place to track progress against key strategic goals and value creation.
  • Constructively communicates compelling arguments based on facts and data and obtains necessary buy-in to deliver on business objectives.
  • Builds working relationships with business management and other partners in support of key priorities and objectives through analytics.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.
  • CPA designation is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and requirements to maintain compliance to all relevant statues and guiding principles.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must have exceptional writing and verbal presentation skills to serve a broad and diverse audience.
  • Intense attention to detail and the ability to fully articulate the numbers and the story behind the numbers.
  • Ability to think analytically from varying perspectives and overcome obstacles creatively.
  • Ability to build working relationships with Business Partners and to tailor communication to the audience.
  • Ability to negotiate and avoid conflict.
  • Experience with Microsoft Navision or similar ERP system preferred.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications with advanced knowledge of Excel.

Working Conditions:

  • Typical office environment.

May periodically travel to visit company greenhouses in USA and Canada
