  • DEFINITION: The Student Success Specialist will implement a systemic program to promote increased achievement through targeted interventions. The Student Success Specialist (SSS) assists leadership in coordinating additional academic and social emotional support to succeed in school, and become socially responsible citizens and productive members of society. There will also be a focus on students who are actively involved in high school athletic and extracurricular programs to guide academic progress and ensure eligibility. All support efforts will be done in a collaborative effort with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, and staff.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    TASKS:
    Observes and monitors student's behavior in the classroom, school grounds, cafeteria, library, school buses, and other areas; establishes, maintains, and promotes a school culture which ensures the emotional and physical safety and wellbeing of students and emphasizes mutual respect, self-worth, self-discipline, cooperation, consideration and responsibility; collaborates with leadership, teachers, counselors and others to assess student needs and develop academic and social emotional supports. Utilizes positive reinforcement to maximize desired behavior and educational outcomes. The SSS works collaboratively with school staff to increase the level of existing communication between home and school.

    Maintains and monitors eligibility of students who are actively involved in high school athletic and extracurricular programs to guide academic progress and ensure eligibility throughout the year in and out of season to promote strong academic achievement; develops and implements interventions including after school tutoring to support student athletes Monitors and documents the academic progress of student athletes to support 4-year graduation. Works with counselors to promote and encourage students to take college entrance exams (SAT, ACT), monitors eligibility for athletes who aspire to compete at the college level (NCAA/NAIA) and promotes and encourages post-high school education. Develops character and pride in being a student/athlete within Sunnyside School District. Develops end of semester reports for high school administrators. Promotes academics, and the athletic program in the middle schools and in the community

    Meets with students who are not making sufficient growth and/or completing grade level standards to determine individual intervention plans. Maintains documentation of intervention plans.These may include but are not limited to facilitating an in school suspension program on an intermittent basis to allow for short term placements for instruction and development of individual improvement plans. Participate in required district training/meetings and provide appropriate follow up. Supervise special projects related to these tasks as assigned by the principal.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
    Knowledge of adolescent development (needs, behaviors)
    Knowledge of District and Department policies and procedures.
    Knowledge of AIA rules and regulations governing interscholastics.
    Knowledge of various teaching techniques and methods.
    Knowledge of classroom management methods.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students/families, staff, and community agencies.
    Ability to analyze situations and information and use sound judgment to make decisions regarding an appropriate course of action.
    Skill in applying common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
    Skill in reading and interpreting documents such as rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.
    Skill in writing routine reports and correspondence.
    Skill in effective written and oral communication.
    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an indoor environment. Work requires frequent sitting, repetitive motion, vision to monitor, and may require some lifting.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.
    Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate.
    Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bilingual Spanish/English
    Three (3) years of athletic/coaching experience at the high school level.
