Sunline Transit Agency is Hiring a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor Near Thousand Palms, CA

Under direction of the Deputy Chief Operation Officer – Maintenance, the Maintenance Supervisor plans, organizes and supervises maintenance and repair of Agency fixed route and paratransit buses and other vehicles and equipment in an assigned location and shift; performs inspections and quality control checks to ensure the safety and reliability of assigned buses and vehicles; assigns mechanics or responds to road failures and operational emergencies; and performs related duties as assigned.
Candidate must be available to work early mornings, late nights, holidays, and weekends as the maintenance shop is open 24/7, closing only twice a year. Responsible for the maintenance and repair to ensure a sufficient number of clean, safe and reliable vehicles to meet transportation operations requirements. Incumbents supervise, train and monitor the work of mechanics and other staff engaged in maintaining, servicing and repairing buses and other vehicles. Incumbents inspect completed work, monitor maintenance and repair activities on the shop floor, coordinate the completion of repairs and other services between locations and by outside vendors, when required, and maintain detailed records on work and parts orders and inspections. Maintenance Supervisor is distinguished from Maintenance Manager in that an incumbent in the latter class has overall responsibility for maintenance of the bus fleet to meet the Agency's transit operations requirements consistent with Agency standards and all safety and regulatory requirements. Will perform other duties and projects as assigned.
  1. Plans, organizes, controls, manages and evaluates the work of assigned mechanics and other staff in an assigned location and shift; participates in establishing operational plans and initiatives to meet department goals and objectives; implements departmental plans, work programs, processes, procedures and policies required to achieve overall department performance results; coordinates the performance of functional responsibilities with other supervisors and staff to meet operational requirements and minimize unscheduled maintenance and road failures which interrupt service.
  2. Plans and evaluates the performance of assigned mechanics and other staff; establishes performance requirements and personal development targets; monitors performance and provides training and coaching to enhance skills and for performance improvement and development; recommends rewards to recog­nize performance; recommends disciplinary action, up to and including termination, to address perform­ance deficiencies, subject to management concurrence, in accordance with the Agency's human resources policies and procedures.
  3. Provides leadership and works with staff to develop and maintain a high performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports achieving the Agency's mission, strategic goals and core values.
  4. Assigns and supervises the work of mechanics and utility workers engaged in cleaning, fueling, maintaining and repairing buses and other vehicles; checks in buses, reviews field condition reports, makes inspections and creates work orders for work required on shift; estimates time, material and parts costs; supervises and monitors work in progress on the shop floor and conducts quality checks of completed work to ensure full compliance with Agency standards and all applicable state and federal safety requirements; prepares and submits to Dispatch a list of buses ready for daily bus route operations; opens, closes and reviews repair and related parts orders, inspection reports and other documents associated with vehicle maintenance; maintains maintenance logs.
  5. Submits orders for parts, tools, supplies and equipment to ensure optimal repair time and return of buses to service; enters or submits data on parts used; assists in locating vendors for non-inventory parts and submits purchase orders.
  6. Conducts weekly and monthly vehicle inspections and records defects requiring repair or replacement; supervises the completion of preventative maintenance activities, including oil analysis, engine and transmission performance analysis, lubrication and oil and filter changes and adjustment or replacement of worn parts or components.
  7. Responds to inquiries from drivers regarding bus equipment operation; responds to road failures and breakdowns.
  8. Conducts shop safety training and provides guidance on safe work practices; observes, monitors and enforces staff compliance with safety policies and procedures; supervises and participates in the storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials in conformance with Agency policies and standards and environmental regulations.
  9. Coordinates the exchange of buses between facilities to provide for scheduled preventative maintenance and/or warranty repairs and to meet operational requirements.
  10. Prepares and maintains department records and reports, including payroll, attendance and performance statistics; maintains records and files; prepares a variety of periodic and special reports.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• At least five years of increasingly responsible fleet maintenance and repair experience in a public transit agency; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Ability to obtain California Driver License Class B within the first two months of employment and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency's insurance policy
• Certification as a Commercial DOT Brake Inspector preferred
