Summary:
Functions in collaboration with surgeons and physicians in the Bariatric Care Center following established standards and practices in providing care to surgical and medical weight loss management patients in an outpatient setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education Required:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and approved Nurse Practitioner Program or a nationally accredited Physician Assistant Program, MPAS preferred
  • Current State of Ohio Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner licenses or State of Ohio Physician’s Assistance license
  • If a Nurse Practitioner, State of Ohio Certificate of Prescriptive Authority
  • If a Nurse Practitioner, NCC certification
  • If a PA, completion of PA educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission of Education for the Physician Assistant (its predecessor agencies, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, and the Allied Health Education and Accreditation); or have passed the national certification examination administered by the National Commission of Certification of Physicians Assistants
  • If a Nurse Practitioner, certification as a Bariatric Nurse through the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery preferred, must obtain within 2 years and maintain thereafter
  • Successful completion of orientation program, supervised by a collaborative physician.
Experience & Training Required:
  • Three years professional nursing or physician assistant experience in a clinic setting with both adult and adolescent patients preferred
  • Previous experience working with overweight and/or morbidly obese patients desirable
- Previous experience working with pre- and post-operative weight loss surgery patients desirable
  • Proficient operation of office equipments (i.e., computer, fax, copier)
  • Able to utilize medical equipment and supplies necessary to carry out duties for patient care
  • Ability to place intravenous catheters and administer IVF desirable
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, patient’s families, sales representatives, and the general public.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Excellent skills in communication, organizing, self-motivation, accuracy, and time management.
  • Ability to read and interpret medical documents, which are commonly found in a clinic or physician office environment.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of professionals.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to meet the ever changing needs of patients and health care team members.
  • BLS certification.
  • If a nurse practitioner, knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and medical care to give and evaluate patient care for both adult and adolescent patients
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Population Specific Competency: ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers of size with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity
Level of Physical Demands:
  • Heavy: Exerts 50-100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or ten to 20 pounds of force continuously to move objects
