The Valent BioSciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent BioSciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.

Description of Job:

As the QC Entomology Method Development Specialist (Temporary Position) at Valent BioSciences, you will assist in the development of Quality Control bioassay test methods for Valent BioSciences. You will be responsible for learning and understanding the fundamentals of our current bioassay methods and how to rear high quality insects in our insectary, in order to develop and execute new and/or alternate insect bioassay test methods. Good documentation practices as well as the ability to read, comprehend, follow, and create written procedures is a requirement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Experimental testing of in-process and finished goods using insect bioassay.
  • Preparation of standards and stock solutions.
  • Perform insectary work with a significant focus on cleanliness and consistency.
  • Perform calculation and evaluation of insect bioassay results based on probit analysis utilizing Microsoft Excel and a specified statistical analysis program. 
  • Troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation and administer simple repairs as needed.
  • Creation and completion of test records, as well as data entry, trending, and analysis.

Additional Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Comply with the QMS in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
  • Identify and report deviations/nonconforming work and participate in corrective/preventive actions as needed.
  • Follow standard test methods and other work instructions, and document quality activities as required. This includes handling of samples and performing analyses.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities in the laboratory.
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Preparation of insect diets as needed.
  • Must have flexibility to work some off-shift, weekend, and/or overtime hours as required to meet business needs. 
  • Performs other tasks as specified by the manager/director.

Preferred Qualifications/Education

  • HS diploma or equivalent required. BA or currently majoring in Biology, Entomology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or closely related field desired.
  • Experience with Good Aseptic Technique required.
  • Experience with Good Lab Practices (GLP).
  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) experience or knowledge is beneficial.
  • Experience with insect rearing and maintenance of insect colonies desired but not required.
  • Experience with bioassay methods desired but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and other spreadsheet/database software.
  • Good inter-departmental communication (written / verbal), problem solving, and decision making required.
  • Ability to write, comprehend, and understand written scientific procedures.
  • Data management and computer-generated reports experience preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data.
