Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Community Mental Hygiene is Hiring a Drug Counselor Near Riverhead, NY

Suffolk County Division of Community Mental Hygiene Services is seeking full-time Drug Counselor to work at the Suffolk County correctional facilities in Yaphank and Riverhead.

  • Completes behavioral health screening and assessment of referred incarcerated individuals for substance use disorder
  • Act as primary counselor for individuals Methadone as medication treatment for OUD.
  • Act as primary liaison with SC OTP for individuals initiated on Methadone for OUD while incarcerated.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates an individualized treatment plan for inmates.
  • Monitors inmate progress and makes recommendations for further treatment, including referral for medication assisted treatment option review if appropriate;
  • Provides individual and group counseling services;
  • Maintains patient records and reports;
  • Collaborates as part of multidisciplinary team with supervisors, clinic staff, medical unit and corrections (where appropriate) regarding incarcerated individuals progress and recommended services;
  • Conduct education and informational sessions for individuals with substance use disorders;
  • Provide services of long and short term supportive counseling to incarcerated individuals.
  • Provide, and refer to, transitional services for discharge planning to community based services
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must either have a current certification from NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS)as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), or possession of the requirements necessary to be designated as a Qualified Health Professional (QHP) with one year of experience or satisfactory completion of a training program in the treatment of substance use disorders. All applicants must uphold the OASAS Scope of Practice and the Canon of Ethical Principles.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $48,442.00 per year
