Position Overview
The Senior Member of Technical Staff is responsible for developing and conducting simulations of various novel concepts for high-capacity undersea coherent fiber-optic communication systems. The role supports research and development projects across the organization that requires understanding and/or simulation capability of various aspects related to physics of optical signal transmission and fiber optic communication system optimization. The position has a role in generating, supporting, and propagating novel ideas. Collaboration with various departments on research and development projects. This position reports to the Senior Director of System Research.
Responsibilities
  • Participates in studies of various aspects of both existing and potential future communication submarine links related to various aspects of technology. Works on and with simulation tools that describe various aspects of both existing and potential future communication submarine links related to various aspects of physics of optical propagation, signal processing, and sensing.
  • Develops innovative ideas and makes recommendations for communication systems improvements.
  • Aggregates and summarizes results for presentation them either internally to other teams as an input for new directions towards innovative products and/or externally to the customers or on the other technical events.
  • Supports the experimental research team, which tests various novel ideas for the future submarine systems.
  • Provides developers and other researchers across the company with the knowledge, simulations of optical propagation physics, signal processing and system design and cost-per-bit optimization aspects.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams for cost-per-bit studies, providing input for direction of further technology development.
  • Provides contributions to the foundation for the innovative solutions for submarine communication business.
  • Consistently ensures that business is always conducted with integrity and that behavior aligns with SubCom policies, procedures, and core values.
Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics.
  • Have minimum 8 years' experience in simulating and modeling of system and component aspects for optical communications.
  • Capability in creating simulation models for communication systems and using the models to analyze and optimize the system is required (e.g. signal propagation, amplifier or similar communication component modeling, system level modeling).
  • Ability to use analytical skills
  • Extensive experience with programing languages typically used in computer modeling of communication systems (e.g. Matlab, C , and Mathematica)
  • General knowledge of telecommunication technology
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coworkers especially with experimental teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
  • Ability to find creative solutions when approaching problems and challenges.
