STV is Hiring a Construction Inspector Near Wilkesboro, NC

We have a thriving Transportation practice with a close-knit, team-oriented group that is growing rapidly. Due to our success, we need to continue adding resources to assist with the delivery of our anticipated workload which includes a variety of services associated with various infrastructure improvement projects for NCDOT (across all 14 Divisions) as well as numerous municipal, institutional, and private sector clients.
We have an immediate need for an Engineering Technician I Trainee in the North Wilkesboro, NC area which involves technical work supporting higher level technicians or engineers in maintenance, construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, and construction traffic control. The position will require the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. The work involves limited decision making and judgement. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
Applicants chosen for the trainee program will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Some knowledge of surveying, highway construction or design and general knowledge of mathematical functions is preferred. Employees in this position may be exposed to high traffic volumes, may work at heights over water or traffic, and may have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. This position must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrain. This position is expected to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain. This position will be required to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. The successful applicant for this position is expected to safely work high above ground, safely operate a motor vehicle, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.
The employee will typically be assigned to NCDOT roadway and bridge construction projects. Daily travel to project site will be required. Candidates must work nights and weekends when required. Overnight travel is not expected but may be necessary on a limited basis.
Candidates must hold a hold a valid state driver’s license and clean driving record and have the ability to lift 50 pounds, traverse rough terrain, walk or stand for extended periods of time while performing manual tasks, and work outdoors during all types of weather.
Minimum Education And Requirements
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicants must be able to complete all requirements detailed in the “NC Department of Transportation’s Engineering Technician I Trainee Program for Private Engineering Firms” manual including timely completion of various self-study courses and in-person certifications.
  • Must be able to fulfill essential job functions in a consistent state of alertness and safe manner.
