The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Program Description:
Project Location: Berkeley, CA
The Bay Area Urban Forestry Crew will work as a team with local park and city staff on various urban forestry projects to address issues of tree canopy in disadvantaged communities.All three crew members will have on-the-job training with SCA and partner staff to complete different projects throughout various parks and city property that will include:

  • Tree care including watering, pruning, and mulching
  • Tree mapping and inventory
  • Education and outreach about urban forestry
Crew Members will be trained in tool usage, safety, member wellness, job hazard assessments, and conflict resolution. Members will work in new outdoor environments all while learning new skills. Being excited and open to new experiences is ahugeadvantage for members.

The team will consist of 3 members and 1 leader. Crew Members meet at a centralized pick-up and drop-off location and are transported to their work site each day in an SCA provided vehicle. Each member will share in the responsibility of the care and management of SCA provided vehicles and trailers.

Member Qualifications:
  • Experience or interest with conservation work skills or related skills preferred – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must have the ability to legally work in the US

Additional Information:
Schedule:Monday - Thursday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Fridays 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Possible Saturdays in the fall months

Training may include:

  • Project tool use and safety, including chainsaw
  • Basic first aid
  • Field tool use
  • Plant ID
  • Trail building and maintenance skills
  • Safety and risk management
