Student Conservation Association is Hiring a Field Leader- Cleveland Urban Foresty Summer Youth Crew Near Cleveland, OH

Position Summary

As Crew Leader, you will be working with a co-lead to guide and inspire a team of 6 youth members from the Cleveland, OH area. The crew will work on urban forestry projects such as tree maintenance, watering, mulching, invasive species removal, and data collection in the Buckeye neighborhood of Cleveland. Project planning, teambuilding, and environmental education will also be required throughout the season.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics; Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship; Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA; Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff.

Required Qualifications

Leader Qualifications: Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching, or environmental education Experience with conservation work skills or related skills – i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more Must be able to attend Crew Leader training out-of-state from 6/10/24 - 6/23/24 Must be a minimum of 21 years of age Must have the ability to legally work in the US Must have a valid driver’s license for 3 years and MVR that meets SCA standards


Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in tree planting or maintenance, gardening, or landscaping; Previous experience leading crews desired


Hours

40 per week


Living Accommodations

Housing is not available for this position.


Compensation

Leaders will receive a salary of $750 per week for 10 weeks, including 2 weeks of paid training and one week of local preparation, 6 weeks leading the crew, and one week of wrap-up at the close of the season. In addition leaders receive ellphone reimbursement of $45 per month, and SCA leader training including Wilderness First Aid valued at $1100.

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
