STScI is Hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in Extragalactic Astronomy #0010295 Near Baltimore, MD

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher in astronomy to work with Dr. Marc Rafelski and collaborators. The research projects encompass observational extragalactic science based on imaging and spectroscopy from a wide range of observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Very Large Telescope (VLT), and Keck Observatory. The postdoc will work with data from the CLASS (Characterizing Lyman-Alpha emitters with Snapshot Survey) and PIE (The Parallel Ionizing Emissivity Survey) and PIE , and PASSAGE (Parallel Application of Slitless Spectroscopy to Analyze Galaxy Evolution) surveys.
The postdoc will work with many collaborators, including Drs. Alex Beckett, Mitchell Revalski, Kalina Nedkova, Grecco Oyarzun, and Alaina Henry at STScI, Rajeshwari Dutta at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune India, Harry Teplitz and Vihang Mehta at IPAC, Claudia Scarlata at UMN, and Michele Fumagalli and Matteo Fossati at the University of Milano Bicocca. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2024, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment for the STScI positions is for at least one year, with the expected renewal to a 2nd and 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Additional funding is expected from accepted Cycle 31 HST programs.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) data reduction and analysis of HST observations; (b) evolution of galaxies; (c) spectral energy distribution modeling; or (d) Lyman continuum and Lyman-alpha escape. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.
