THE JOBResponsibilitiesThis is a Director of Finishing Operations position and requires someone who designs, implements and changes as needed, the performance measurements and reports necessary to effectively evaluate operational performance for worker safety, food safety, on time shipments, schedule attainment, costs and quality and establish trends in product quality, customer service. As a Director of Finishing Operations your roles and responsibilities will include:
Global Operations
  • Has direct responsibility for Kalamazoo finishing operations.
  • Participates in the Global Manufacturing team to drive consistency through standardization of methods.
  • Works collaboratively with the Process Technology Team and global counterparts to identify capital needs for Finishing Operations and engage with upper management and engineering to address those needs.
Strategic Planning, Operational Improvements, Financial Metrics
  • Works with supervisors, engineering, maintenance, and process engineering to scope and prioritize non-capital and capital projects. Provides justification for projects and functions as champion to gain authorization of needed resources. Confirms projects are completed and meet performance expectations.
  • Evaluates and improves the tracking and trends for inventory accuracy for Finishing Department for in-process, packaging materials on-site and Finished Goods shipped off site. Evaluates the causes in Finishing which impact on time delivery and determines, short term and long-term countermeasures and course of action.
  • Manages budget and spend for Finishing Operations. Explains positive and negative variances to leadership and organization. Establishes improvement programs to meet/exceed cost out targets, including supervisor and operator overtime.
  • Collaboratively establishes measures, targets and plans with appropriate departments using Dashboards and relevant lean manufacturing tools.
Management Expectations
  • Delegate weekly and monthly workload to direct reports. Quantifies workload of department and skills required to successfully contribute to the organization in the Finishing department.
  • Writes goals and objectives aligned with corporate goals/strategy, tracks progress over course of fiscal year. Creates developmental plans for direct reports, tracks progress over course of fiscal year.
  • Hires and trains employees. Works with leadership on succession planning, ensuring long term success. Develops staffing plans, talent management and retention. Addresses personnel issues where necessary. Coaches and mentors new supervisors and managers on management of people.
  • Uses measurements to make improvements to processes. Documents changes and improvements to processes and procedures. Reports progress to executive leadership. Develops and implements new metrics and measurement systems.
Daily Operations/Troubleshooting
  • Participates as needed in Finishing daily operating meeting Finishing departments, Quality Control, R&D, Customer Experience and Procurement, identify exceptions and potential problem jobs which could lead to late orders.
  • Brings issues forward that may impact performance of the team including large orders, raw material concerns, changes in demand, rush requests, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains a team environment by coaching and working with operators and supervisors across all shifts of operations for employee safety, food safety, customer on-time delivery, production schedule and improvement opportunities.
Food safety and employee safety
  • Works with the Corporate Safety leadership and KEST, establishes measures for safety in Finishing and tracks/measures over time. Establishes improvement programs to meet/exceed corporate safety targets. Ensures follow through and redefines metrics and expectations accordingly.
  • Works with Quality Control and Quality Assurance to establish measures, standard work, and auditing practices to keep the Finishing Operations Audit Ready Every Day and maintain SQF Certification. Tracks and trends food safety auditing of Finishing Operations and puts appropriate plans in place to address nonconformances in Food Safety Programs.
  • Works collaboratively with Sanitation to ensure achievement of agreed sanitation standards, schedules, and metrics.
Procedures/standards and operational metrics tracking
  • Leads development and implementation of standards for operations (SOPs), standard work, operator training, operator evaluations and supervisor training in Finishing.
  • Evaluates the tracking and trends for customer complaints, non-conformances and DOT compliance issues related to Finishing. Implements appropriate short-term corrective actions and where patterns exist, long term preventive actions.
  • Manages metrics for labor efficiency, drives improvement through Lean, effective overtime management, and other means.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCEMost Importantly, You Need To Be a Passionate Director Of Finishing Operations Who Enjoys His Work And Is Considered To Be One Of The Best Within Your Organization. The Ideal Director Of Finishing Operations Would Be Someone With Deep Experience In Many (if Not All) Of The Following
  • 4-year bachelors degree in technical or business focused area.
  • 5-10 years of experience in systems/process improvement, quality, supply chain and or/production in the food, beverage, or allied industries.
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience with history of developing multiple employees.
  • Demonstrated ability in forming and leading cross-functional teams to resolve problems in a collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategy plans and work with staff on implementation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills ability to work with people of differing experience and education levels.
  • Excellent direct, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading multiple operations, cross functional and cross site process, and project improvements
