Strike, LLC is Hiring a Driller (Delta Directional) Near Birmingham, AL

Delta is currently seeking Directional Drill Operators/Locators to join our team. The role of a Horizontal/Directional Drill Operator includes operating horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment. Perform semi-skilled activities related to HDD locating must be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground telecommunications cable conduit, including fiber optic cable.
  • Ensures safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
  • Performs all duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Setup and cleanup of work site including traffic and pedestrian control.
  • Reads utility locates and coordinating day lighting of these facilities.
  • Ensures all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site.
  • Inspects the work that is in progress to ensure that the workmanship conforms to specifications.
  • Operates construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
  • Level earth to final grade specifications.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment operations from trucks to other equipment as directed and certified.
  • Performs proper maintenance by greasing, oiling, and making minor repairs on equipment.
  • Leads teams in the field effectively and efficiently as needed and directed by supervisor.

Driller’s responsibilities include:

  • Confirm bore path with install foreman and locator (including walking the bore path).
  • Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork.
  • Ensure there are proper clearances to install the product per standards.
  • Record the depth of the drill head as required.
  • Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product.
  • Oversee laborers and/or crew member’s work and monitor time usage.
  • Responsible for loading and mobilizing equipment to project site
  • Responsible for performing and documenting drilling project tasks
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures and other duties as required

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3 years of Horizontal Directional Drill experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must obtain a CDL class “A” driver’s license within 30 days of employment
  • Clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with different size Vermeer or Ditch Witch units and various brands of locating equipment
  • Working experience of underground construction and Fiber builds
  • City, County and State clearance code knowledge and related
  • Ability to read and understand maps, drawings and diagrams for project build process
  • Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and work overtime as required.

Competencies:

  • Ability to follow instructions and implement Standard Operating Procedures
  • Mechanical/Welding aptitude
  • Ability to operate all drilling associated equipment (backhoe, forklift, etc.)
  • Ability to direct self and 1 to 2 others
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Physical Demands:

  • Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting and reaching to include walking and standing 80% of the time.
  • Frequent activities requiring handling and grasping with the hands to turn wrenches and valves.
  • Occasional use of arms to reach above the head and will occasionally work on ladders and climb stairs.
  • Occasional lifting and pulling of up to 20 lbs., frequent lifting and pulling of up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting and pulling of up to 75 lbs.
  • Exposure to elements 100% of the time
  • Communicating, hearing and seeing required for completion of essential functions.
  • Some daily aspects of the job pose threats or hazards capable of producing severe physical injury.
  • Exposure to bright lights, extreme temperatures, loud noise, dust, gas and/or fumes.
  • Exposure to construction sites.

  • Complies with Strike’s policies and procedures
  • Requires travel as needed to project job sites.
  • Complies with Strike’s Drug & Alcohol Policy maintaining favorable drug testing results throughout employment.
  • Performs job safely with respect to others, property and to individual safety.
  • Works effectively with others to encourage teamwork and productivity.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
