JOB TITLE: Family & Community Engagement Specialist (Districtwide)

SUPERVISOR: Supervisor of Innovation & Engagement

PURPOSE: Supports and complements the goals and vision of the Board of Education by creating school partnerships wherein students and families are supported, community members are connected, and successful outcomes are achieved.

Summary:

The Family and Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for providing support in formulating, developing, implementing, sustaining and evaluating the schools' parent and community engagement programming strategies to enhance student success.

Responsibilities:

The Family and Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day management of the family and community engagement strategy, which includes building and maintaining relationships with administration, faculty, staff, students, and families. In this role, it is expected that the employee will create, strengthen, and maintain the bridge between the school and community in the efforts of student success in academics, attendance, and social-emotional development.

The Family and Community Engagement Specialist plays a critical role in:
    Working closely with administrators, family, community members and staff to align family engagement practices with school improvement plans and overall school priorities;
    Supporting principals and school staff in facilitating a needs assessment for the school, students, and parents/families, identifying focus areas and creating a customized action plan for increasing family and community engagement
    Organizing parent and community volunteer/mentoring programs to address the needs of students (i.e. chronic absenteeism)
    Developing community partnerships for providing extra-curricular programming, career insights and/or internships, community-outreach programming for students (for example, reading to the blind, neighborhood/park clean-ups, etc.)
    Coordinating/facilitating workshops and academic events to help educate parents about academic expectations and to equip parents with strategies that will help them help their students to be more successful in school
    Working with district/school leadership and teachers to establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with parents that help to ensure support for student learning in and out of school
    Maintaining a database to document all services and activities provided to support family engagement and education and use the data to evaluate the effectiveness of their parent/family/community outreach programs
    Maintaining ongoing, effective communication with all parents, community, and staff regarding school programs
    Ensuring that the parent website is maintained at each school and ensures that the site is linked to the district website
    Making periodic home visits, along with appropriate school staff, regarding attendance, emergency family needs, and crisis situations;
    Supporting all parents to help them demonstrate an improved understanding of school policies, procedures, and educational requirements
    Supervising all program partners providing out-of-school time services across the district
    Coordinating the allocation of space in conjunction with school administration for student and family support services, and for special events.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
    A Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in education, sociology, social work, business or some closely related field from an accredited college or university is required.
    Three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience is preferred, to include experience in nonprofit management, education, health or social work, and knowledge of community-based organizations.
    Must be comfortable with the use of data and presenting data to small and large groups.
    Proven experience in short- and long-range planning.
    Bi-lingual Spanish speaking preferred.
Skill Requirements
    Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize own work to meet deadlines and accomplish assigned tasks within established timelines including maintaining accurate records and files.
    Passionate about working with schools to build their capacity to offer effective programs to positively impact our youth and their families.
    Knowledge of national and state educational goals and objectives.
    Knowledge of current educational trends, methods, research, and technology.
    Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills.
    Ability to plan and present information to a variety of audiences.
    High integrity and an exceptional work ethic required.
    Must be flexible and receptive to change.
Physical Demands
    Must have a valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle.
    Must be able to push or lift upto 25 lbs occasionally.
Compensation and Benefits
    12-month position; Non-union; Exempt
    Compensation varies depending on experience
