POSITION TITLE: Diesel Locomotive Foreman

FLSA: Non-exempt

Salary: $30-$34 per hour

Retirement: 401k

FT or PT: Full time

POSITION REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Locomotives & Rolling Stock

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Diesel Locomotive Foreman is responsible for the mechanical condition and regulatory compliance of all operational locomotives and motorcars powered by internal combustion engines. The Diesel Foreman directs the periodic inspection, maintenance and repair of all internal combustion powered locomotive systems. He is also responsible for all running repairs to internal combustion powered locomotives that may be required. Major shop repairs and overhauls are carried out in coordination with the Chief Mechanical Officer and Mechanical Shop Superintendent, to ensure budget and schedule requirements are met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Plan and direct the mechanical inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of internal combustion powered locomotives and motorcars.

• Perform routine servicing and inspection on all in service internal combustion powered locomotives and motorcars.

• Identify short-term and long-term mechanical needs of internal combustion powered locomotives and motorcars, and plan appropriately for needed repair.

• Properly complete and file maintenance and inspection records, as applicable.

• Coordinate placement of equipment for required work with relevant stake holders.

• Coordinate brake valve maintenance and inventory.

• Monitor and maintain inventory of parts required to maintain locomotives in good condition and avoid out of service time.

• Maintain locomotive maintenance records for internal combustion powered locomotives.

• Other duties as assigned.

• Fabricates parts to specified dimensions and tolerances.

• Able to identify parts and materials appropriate for application.

• Anticipates need for materials and makes requisitions in a timely manner.

• Seeks instruction when needed to complete inspections and repairs properly.

• Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work.

• Enthusiastically takes on responsibility and aids Team Members to accomplish department goals.

• Maintains supplies required for the daily operation of internal combustion powered locomotives.

• Ensures locomotives are ready when required for service.

• Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.

• Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required.

• Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos from the President.

• Works well with others

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A positive attitude.

• Understanding of the physics of the railroad environment.

• Understanding of general mechanical principles related to locomotive mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical systems.

• Ability to plan and execute a long-term locomotive maintenance program within fiscal and regulatory constraints.

• Be familiar with, or know how to properly reference, all of the regulatory requirements of Title 49 CFR and AAR maintenance standards that pertain to all internal combustion powered locomotives on the railroad, including mechanical, air brake and safety requirements.

• Be familiar with the use of AAR gauges required to check wear on wheels, couplers, and other components.

• Be familiar on the safety rules of the railroad, with emphasis on blue signal protection rules.

• Minimum of one (1) year as an SRC Internal Combustion Locomotive Mechanic OR other comparable trade experience.

• Familiarity with FRA regulations regarding railroad locomotives and their periodic inspection.

• Enthusiasm for the company and its mission.

• Strong understanding of railroad locomotive construction and maintenance.

• Familiarity with air brake systems.

• Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.

• Capable of operating welding machines, oxy/fuel torch rigs, plasma cutters, angle grinders and other metal fabrication tools at or above a foundational level.

• Familiarity with basic machine tools, such as band saws and drill presses.

• Proficient with the use of hand and power tools.

• Ability to read and work from simple mechanical drawings.

• Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.

• Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.

• Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

• Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions, as needed.

• Willingness and desire to learn.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm., Monday through Friday. Shift has occasional variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.

• Work is both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions during all seasons.

• Work requires regular social contact with Team Members, customers, and vendors.

• Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.

• Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances.

• Frequent work in spaces allowing limited mobility.

• Frequent need for personal protective equipment.

• Extended periods of walking, standing, or kneeling.

• Frequent lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
